check engine codes..800 dragon.

My check engine light on my 2008 dragon 800 was flashing today. It would flash in a series of 5. Anyone know what it means. It did this intermittently all day long, but seemed to run ok. Thanks & Merry Christmas

EGT Sensor

Mine did the exact same thing last year. Your warranty should cover it. Make sure it's on tight...but not too tight. When mine went out it ran terrible and I barely was able to limp it out of the woods. Yet another adventure on my dragon.

where did u find that? the only thing i found in my owner manual is if it flashes six times then the det sensor is out. i couldnt find anything else bout it. thanks 800 rmk.:beer;:beer;:beer; $137 seems kind of expensive for a 5vdc sensor. any other alternatives?
different sensors or plugging the hole and running without?

The guys i ride with all got there motors updated and all of ours when we start them up flash a couple times service engine but seriously this new motor rocks. it pulls good rpms and holds steady and i swear it is getting awesome fuel mileage. like that really matters much but oh well.

yah mine flashes to but nothing for power loss or fuel mileage loss.
fuel mileage is better than last yeat and power feels the same, only the third tank in it but i want more power maybe a set of twins and a head mod is in order

08 vs 09 sensors ???

I rode all day on 12/26. Sometimes the check engine light was flashing (like on 12/24) & sometimes it would not flash at all. When it wasn't flashing the sled ripped, when it was flashing it seemed down on power, but totally ridable. Donavon from Xtreme emailed me & also said the 5 flashes are the egt sensor and when it goes bad the engine runs very rich. I went to Colorado Powersports today to order a new one. The part numbers for an 08 dragon is different than the '10 dragon 800 egt sensor. We pulled one out of a new 800 dragons they had on the showroom floor and it's egt sensor is about a 1/4 inch longer than mine. I am going to install the new senor and see what happens. HERE IS THE QUESTION OF THE DAY: if we have basically 2010 motors after the software, head and piston updates, is it possible we also need the new 2010 egt sensor? I have no clue how these things work or if it could make a difference. Finally, a big thanks to Colorado Powersports for parting out a new sled to get mine back on the mountain.

My understanding is that when the exhaust sensor reaches a certain temp then the ECU leans down the fuel mixture-5%. So if it's not working you would be too rich. The 5 flashes indicate that the voltage reading is either high or low. The voltage range is .06 to 4.9 Vdc and R's above 3000. The ECU and electronics are basically the same so I'll bet the 2010 sensor works just fine. Maybe it gets a better reading deeper into pipe center.
As we all know, the DET system also flashes the check engine light indicating detonation. Not the 5 flashes you have though-solid while it's adjusting fuel and timing and then flashes the check engine light and reduces max R's to 6000 as step two.

Flashing check engine light

Just talked to my dealer yesterday. I had the flashing check engine light on my 08 D8 last week. He plugged it into computer, and it showed a bad crankshaft position sensor. In an earlier post, it was stated that the flashing light meant a bad E.G.T. sensor. In reality, the flashing light is actually a signal that some sensor is bad. The computer will tell you which sensor. I guess what I'm saying is that you can't put a carte blanche solution to the flashing light. You need to hook up the computer to pinpoint which sensor.
Hope this helps.

EGT sensor

FIVE flashes of the light in a row is the EGT sensor. Tust me no computer needed for that . I have experienced it enough, Rons post is spot on as usual.

Can anybody list what number of flashes mean what? Or where to get that info?... I think it would be handy to have!!

I have had problems with my 09 Assaults engine after the recall updates and re-flash so I had my dealer do another check on it and they flashed it again. Now the sled runs worse than ever. I am not happy with this sled at all. Ill hit a bump and all the dash lights come on for 2-3 seconds the sled will stall and nearly die then they all go off and the sled seems fine for awhile then it randomly repeats. Also the check engine light has been flashing sometimes. I have not been able to count the number of flashes.

Good post Ron. I have a 2010 D8 Switchback with about 200 miles on it. On the third tank of fuel, I had the check-engine light coming on solid (no flashing) after 7000 rpm. I talked to a couple of dealers and they indicated that this is a common complaint...as we all know by now. However, they also indicated that the cause is almost always poor fuel quality. I added some octane booster and the sled ran great an hour after adding the octane booster.

I do seem to have a sputter at times in the lower rpm's (5-6K rpm). Anyone esle have this issue? Any info to share? I put new plugs in, but to no avail.

My 10Assault has been having the same issues. I will be goin along just fine and then all of the sudden it will spit and sputter and wont let me go over 6000rpms. Sometimes it will run fine but the check engine light will flash. I have talked numerous times with my dealer and they are as frustrated as me. They have hooked it up to their computer and all it says it that the DET sensor is the problem. Their 2 main reasons for tripping the sensor are bad gas or overheating. I have cycled through 2 different 92 octane tanks and boost, and i installed ice scratchers... FRUSTRATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bummer man! Sucks to be excited for a new sled and then have it not live up the expectations. Today, I'm going to try a tank of premium with Torco Fuel Accelerator added to get the octane nice and high. I'm curious to see if this will improve the sputtery bottom end performance.

So I have a question for all of you who have experienced the flashing engine light 5 times....this is happening to my buddies 08 dragon and he is also only turning up 7600-7700 rpms. So does this bad egt sensor cause a loss of rpms or could there be another issue?
