Changing oil??

How often should the oil be changed on a non Turbo Apex MTX (if that makes a difference), i think the book says every 5000 km or so, with the first one after 5-600 km or something like that. And what kind of oil are you using. Thanks for any info.

Change filter and oil initially at first 500km and oil once a year or 2 after that if you're running a good synthetic oil. I run Amsoil 0-40, 4-stroke oil and just change the filter after every 20,000 km's and oil every 2 years. I know it sounds like alot but that's what is recommended. I was getting tired of changing oil that looked as good as when I poured it in. Some guys like Mobil 1, but I run everything from my 5.5 hp Lawnmower up to my 502,480 hp Merc in my boat on Amsoil. Never fails!!

Been using Yamaha's synthetic from day one. And it works great. No problems, two years going on the vector, and this will be year #2 on the Nytro.

Yamalube is good also, it's all personal preferance. I just so happen to have a commercial account with Amsoil so it's also financially beneficial for moi!

i change the oil once a year in my s/c phazer. Its part of my look over/new parts in the beginning of the season. motor oil is actually supposed to be changed every 6 months if the engine is not being run. I wouldn't feel good not changing it before the season anyway. i also run amsoil. have to order or drive hour and a half for yamalube. Most people do pre-season work so why not change the oil while you got her all tore down?

Ok now the next dumb question, where is the drain plug for an Apex? I assume you have to pull the skidplate? And how much does it hold? Looks like I am about due for one, I have had it 2 seasons and havent done it yet, but the first one was done at the dealer.

I change it after every season including the oil filter. I switched to mobil 1 this year now that it has enough miles to go to a full synthetic. yes there is a drain in the bottom under the skid plate and one in the bottom of the oil tank. search on here there is a down loadable shop manual that comes in very handy when changing the filter. I might also add that using the k&n filter makes life a little easier when you change it

For the amount of work and oil it's hardly worth pulling the skid and lower drain plug. I did it once and got about a 1/4 cup maybe of oil after an hours worth of work. Your call. And also true synthetic can be run and parked several times whereas conventional oil you should change at the end of every season because it becomes alkaline after being used and when it sits in your crank up against your lovely bearings over the summer you guessed it "the pits"...
