Change Key to Push button?

Hey Guys,

Just wondering if any one with e-start has ever replaced their key setup with a push button or some other setup. With a kill switch, tether, AND a key...it all seems a bit overkill to me, along with the key seeming to fall out every now and again. What I would like to do is take out the key switch, and somehow make that circuit strictly for starting (ie the only bar switch and tether could shut off the engine), and the put a button there instead.

I've ridden the 13XM a lot, and really like that there is just one button on the bar that does start/reverse double duty, and then a kill switch/tether to do the engine stop

Any ideas?

Thanks for the useless reply.

It is most definitely not too hard to turn a key. As I noted, the key seems like an extra kill switch I don't need, along with it tending to fall out...mostly at inopportune times.

Like the push button idea.
Rubber coated, like on marine applications.

I'd want mine RED, so I can feel like I'm driving a Bugatti or something.

No key to break off.

Smart idea.

Cant imaine it'd be that hard to swap that out...wouldn't be too practical for non-ES though.

If you run non-ES, and have a tether-switch + the normal kill-button and wants to run without key, its pretty simple to wiggle the key out when having it in the "ON" position.

Just a little tip.

Or as someone told me, just put the key part way in, turn to on and it pulls right out staying in the on position.

That button is exactly what I had in mind...thanks for the link! Finding the button was more of the secondary concern for me, wiring being the first.. I dont have the machine at home right now, so I havent been able to look at the wiring to see how it could be reworked to exclude the shutoff portion. Shouldnt been too hard once i look at it im guessing. I suppose if a fella had the time, he could sort it all out and make a few extras that were plug and play for anyone who wanted one. Not sure how many old guys like me there are with ES that want a Bugatti red pushbutton start though!

It should be pretty easy.. The key is normally open so this is what I would do:

- Take the ground off your battery
- Unplug the key (this is all you should need to do for ignition)
- Determine which terminals 'close' when the key is cranked on the key switch with a multimeter
- Cut the two corresponding wires from the key plug
- Wire in the push button to these two wires

The button is just closing the loop for the starter solenoid so as long as you find the right wires you should be good to go.

I don't know about the new security features, but if you unplug the key switch won't the sled still run when you pull the cord? If so just unplug, and remove, put you button in te key hole attached to the circuit that closes to actuate the starter and your good to go.

Could you see a sled ending upside down and that starter button getting held down? LOL

Look at the Doo XM....has the estart button on the bars. Unfortunately its orange and not red.
And yes, when rolling the sled to get unstuck it can start! Have heard of this happening and then the throttle getting pinned during the roll....potentially dangerous, or entertaining depending on who it happens to. Just a heads up if you go to a button, put it out of the way and/ or use the tether.

LMAO. Yep. As long as it's the other guy.

What about the security aspects of using the key.
IE when pulling up to fuel up, going in to pay for the gas, coming outside and your ride is Gone.
(I hate it when that happens :face-icon-small-fro )

Just like WinterBrew said my buddies with there XM's have had them fire up when we roll the sleds over then hit the gas also :face-icon-small-dis NOT FUN!! Just one more thing to go wrong out there, along with the Doo's special coded key tether that has took a dump on 2 of there Doo's and we had to pull them back:face-icon-small-dis I think I want simple just the way it is! Thats my opinion anyway.
