Chainsaw

If you're going to cut a branch here or there anything will probably get the job done. If you plan on doing any wood cutting that amounts to anything get a stihl or husky. I have a 026 and 034 stihl and a husky 395. I have used many others and nothing compares to stihl and husky and you kinda get what you pay for. If you do very much wood cutting over the years you will be glad and MUCH LESS frustrated if you get a good saw the first time around. I've had all 3 of mine for sometime and they perform the same now, as they did when they were brand new. With a good saw you will spend alot more time cutting and alot less time cussing. Anyone who has cut much wood with a POS saw will know exactly what i'm talking.

Could not have said it better. If you are going to cut a cord or more a year, buy a Sthil, you will never regret it. If you are only going to cut a stray branch here and there, go to home depot and buy the cheapest that they have. Not much inbetween. Go Stihl and don't regret it if you are going to cut much.

Well said Sambo. I've cut with buddies that had bargain saws and they'd spend equal time cutting and wrenching. "You get what you pay for" applies to saws just as much as anything I've seen. Take good care of one and it will easily last a lifetime if your just cutting firewood for the house.

at work we have a stihl and a husky. personally i dont even attempt to use the stihl. i hate it. it sucks the fuel back way to fast, gets hot fast and is gutless and all it gets used for is limbing. the husky is the real powerhouse. its got a 20 inch bar on it and the only complaint is the hot start but i can live with it. we cut 40 cords at the end of summer for the winter and the stihl usually gets halfway and needs a toon. with the husky we get all 40 done then if we need to fill up for firewood for the campground or cabin outside pits we use a picker to hold the logs and drop into a wagon then go and stack in the shed. also use the husky with a lumber attachment and have done 5 beams and some rough 2x6's for building shelves and other stuff for work.

for power id go husky.

for a light saw go stihl.

just dont get a cheap saw

I got about 400 hours on the 455 rancher berfore it ate a ring. Its a decent saw. Not bad for the price but it you want a more proffessional saw or going to be cutting wood bigger than 12" go with a stihl or a pro husky. The 455 is a home grade model.

learning how to use the saw and keeping the chain out the dirt will help you more than anything (pull the dirt off the log rather then suck it thru the cut etc)
I thought I knew how to run a saw, until I hired on with a long line outfit..whoa!

I bought one of those 455 too. Not real impressed, Hard to start built too cheap. I bought a Stihl 360 which compaires to the 455 and it will drive that 455 into the ground. Ive never bought a pro Husky model before but around here its mostly stihl country. I would like to demo one someday. I just cant put my 460 down.

Having both I would have to agree with what has already been said. I like the stihl's better in the smaller to mid size category but I like my husky 395better than ANY saw I have EVER run but it's a very big saw too. For big saws it usually comes down to personal pref. between stihl and husky, mine being with Husky.

I'm not sure what or how big your looking at cutting and i'm not up on the new stihl numbers but go to your nearest Stihl dealer and ask for whatever they call the equal version of the 034. My 034 is a awesome mid size saw that will do most all wood cutting jobs without wearing you out in a full days use.

Like someone already said keeping it out of the dirt and rocks will pay you dividends. If you do get it into the dirt and or rocks, and I can almost guarantee at some point you will, STOP and put a file to the chain. Trying to continue to cut with a dull saw just works you and the saw that much more and you take a greater chance of burning up the bar and toasting the chain from excessive heat.

Husky powerheads are good for high volume pursuits IMO, Stihls are more for the average user due to the availability of parts just about anywhere. Its also why I picked up a Stihl.
