Chaincase cover removal; am I an ediot or what?!?!?

I am doing my yearly tune up to my 04 800 EFI, and this year decided to go through it one end to the other.

My sled has reverse on it, and I am trying to remove the chaincase cover to drain the oil, and check the chain and its tension. I cannot free the reverse so that the cover will come off. The reverse linkage seems to be the only thing holding it on, and I can not get the star bit on to it with the angle it gives.

Sooooo, is there a trick I do not know here, or is it really this much of a pain?
OR, is there some way I can check the tension of the chain WITHOUT taking the cover off?

Please, any help would be great!!!!

Thanks so much!

I have always gone finger tight and then back if off 1/4 turn. then make sure you hold the bolt while tightening the jam nut.

Yeahh I actually read that after I posted this.... the finger tight then 1/4 turn off. Thats what Ill go and call it good.

It may have the auto-tension-er, I dont really know, but I do know it has a chain tightener bolt cause I already adjusted it, haha

Some have the auto-tensioner, some don't. If yours just has the bolt sticking out the front, it doesn't have the automatic one.

You should be able to unbolt the cover and then slide the shifter forks off the gear to remove the cover. Hard to tell over the internet what's binding :face-icon-small-con

Hope you get it figured out.
