I tried to use my stihl ms180 saw tonite after i put on a brand new chain right out of the package and it cut like it had an old worn out chain on. Can you install these wrong, i don't see how you could looks like to me it can only go on one way. Or is there something im not seeing, im just getting into cutting firewood.

Sounds like your chain is on backwards. Also make sure it is a Stihl brand chain with the correct pitch. Stihl makes their own Oilomatic chains that work in conjunction with the oilomatic lubricating system.

Get that woodpile stocked before sledding season!!!

did you start the chain saw engine so the additional rotation helps with the cutting or are you using the saw like a swede saw...is your chainsaw transmission in reverse..are you sure its wood you are cutting or a fire hydrant...maybe next time when the young fella delivers your newspaper he will take a minute to get er done..

Figured it out with the help thanks again. Im new to using a chain saw and cutting wood so any other helpful tips would be great. I bought a stihl chain for will only use stihl products for it, i wanted to buy one that i know would last so thats why i went that way. I only use it for cutting firewood for camping and back yard fires in the summer and fall. Don't really have a need for a wood burning stove. Thanks again i just should have went out and looked at it before asking i guess.

It was just on backwards. The saw is basically brand new just had to put on new chain on cause i snapped the old one, someones darn kids had a nail driven in one of the pieces i was cutting and didn't notice it till the chain snapped.

how much tension you have on a chain makes a difference. you want to be able to pull it down from the bar a touch. not to much, though. also to tighten or loosen the chain. just undue your nuts a couple of turns and than use the screwdriver to adjust the chain. don't loosen all the way. just enought to take up the slack or give some slack in the chain.

I was thinking of your post yesterday afternoon while I was cutting firewood. I thought I needed a new chain, (this was last year) so I went to my local Cenex store because it was after hours at the Stihl dealer and the dude assured me that this chain was the same as a Stihl. Bought it, cut fine to finish what little I needed to get off the ground and put it away for the year. Well as I was smoking through the logs yesterday with my Cenex chain, (I mean smoking in the bad way) cursing and crabby as all get out, I was thinking you cant put a price on a name brand chain. I actually had the old rusted Stihl chain in the saw box still, rubbed it down with bar oil, put it on and went sawing. Amazing how much better that chain cuts than the Cenex. I really had no need to replace it in the first place, bought a new one cause the Stihl was two years old and had cut quite a bit of wood and figured it was due.

Gonna buy another Stihl as a backup and never again Cenex guy and Cenex chain, you sir are a liar!:face-icon-small-hap

I worked with a kid once that had never been around chain saws. He put the new chain on backwards and tried to use it. Same results would not cut. I noticed it when he was off doing some other work. Turned it around and finished most of his cutting. Returned it to backwards and he came back and worked himself up into a pretty good sweat trying to finish the cutting. Talk about a good laugh except he ruined the bar pushing on the saw for 15 minutes trying to cut one piece of wood.:D

I am sorry but this brings a smile to my face! :)

I was thinking as I was reading down the thread. "is there any way he could have the chain on backwards?" I was thinking "No Way!" Well then you answered the question and it makes me laugh.

Not at you but in general. Thinking about all the little things that we have done over the years and step back and say DUH.

Like trying to drill with the drill spinning the wrong way. I don't care how much cutting fluid you put on that bit it will not CUT unless it is going the right way.

Anyway thanks for the laugh. :)
