I would not use ATF it is a fluid not a lubricant. Meaning it is more like a a hydraulic oil than a lubricating oil. A good synthetic gear oil is by far the best way to go. They have better protection and flow better at lower temps.
Years ago when Ice racing, we tried the atf. Only once because we lost a chain case after 100miles of a 500 mile race. On the first pit stop we knew it was going to happen. Even though full, the chain case was hotter, and the fluid was already burnt.
From Websters
Fluid 1 a : having particles that easily move and change their relative position without a separation of the mass and that easily yield to pressure : capable of flowing
Lubricant-1 : a substance (as grease) capable of reducing friction, heat, and wear when introduced as a film between solid surfaces
2 : something that lessens or prevents friction or difficulty
