chain case oil

How do you change the chain case oil on my 1998 summit x 670? I'm a rookie to snowmobiling but am fairly mechanically savvy. Also, what's the best oil to put in and how much? Sorry, don't have an owner's manual. Thanks in advance.

Also looking to do this to a 1994 polaris XLT, any help on that would be appreciated?

First off sweet sled!! I bought one new in 97 still have it although it's fully mod now. Pull the can then 4 bolts on chain case spray it out with cleaning spray. Amsoil makes a good chaincase oil about 10 oz will do or between the marks on the dip stick.

Thanks guys! I didn't think it would be too tough but I wanted to make sure I was doing it right before I started tearing it apart. Is there a gasket that I will need to replace?

Thanks again!

Nope but there is an o ring that goes all around the case it should come off in the part of the case you remove make sure it is free of any thing before ya put it back together or it will leak. when ya tighten the bolts do them in a criss cross pattern and remember to say dam when your trying to get that very bottom bolt started :D

Unless you want to check the chain and gears, siphon the old oil out. You can measure to see how much you got, then when satisfied you have most of it, just refill. Much easier and you will then be more willing to change it more often.

I use an air-compressor blower/cleaner that has the suction hose to pull cleaner from a separate container. I just took an empty plastic peanut jar, drilled 2 small holes in the plastic lid. Then run one hose to the chaincase and a 2nd hose to the blower. It only takes a few minutes. Or use a turkey baster, etc.

Tip sled on it's side, balance on something so the chain case is flat, pull 4 bolts out of cover, you'll get a nice view of inside and oil will be in there too. Then suck out the oil (maybe lean the sled a bit so it all collects in the bottom by the larger sprocket. wipe the rest out especially all the metal sludge, use spray cleaner to get the last bit (and a roll of paper towel). Inpect chain and gears for anything funny (missing teeth, broken links, etc). I use Shell synthetic chaincase oil from cdn tire cause it's cheap and thick. It may leak a bit out of the dipstick, so be quick when you dump it in (about 9 oz.) then put cover on (making sure o-ring is clean and in it's groove), snug up the bolts criss cross as was mentioned above and make sure not to over tighten they stip out easily. tip her back on the skis. ride lots and do this at least once a year (or more if you use it lots).
