My wife teaches at a high school and wants to get one. Every web site that sells them states that they aren't responisble if they aren't legal in your area. Does anyone know if they are legal in Utah???

Thanks

It's shame she has to resort to using a device like that. But I completely understand why she's seeking one. I know there are times when I could use one.

In answer to your question. From the communications act of 1934
SEC. 333. [47 U.C.S. 333] WILLFUL OR MALICIOUS INTERFERENCE.
No person shall willfully or maliciously interfere with or cause interference
to any radio communications of any station licensed or authorized by or under this
Act or operated by the United States Government.

Cellular, wireless, and two way radio communication is the genre that I used to work in.
You can go to www.fcc.gov and search for "cellular phone jammers" but those devices are illegal to be sold, and obviously illegal to use in the USA.

I can understand the reason why people would want to block cell phone annoyances and interruptions , but some other means of keeping things quiet , other than a "jammer" will have to be thought up.

Found this answer in addition to the one above:

Cell phone jammers are illegal in most countries — except to military, law enforcement and certain governmental agencies.

You are S.O.L. I think....

Public school teacher, I take it? "certain governmental agencies"

I would LOVE it if they could be used at school....and then shut off if there was an emergency.

So many kids text during school...and cheat their azzes off. Would it block texting.
Those kids sit in class and can text a message with their hand and phone inside their pocket. Crazy.
It's NOT allowed to even have them on in school...BUT......they get away with it anyway. They even have ringers at an ultrasonic pitch that adults for some reason can't hear. I've seen that one. I can hear it when it's close, but not from across the room.

"Keep both hands where I can see them at all times." LOL

I agree... I don't see why they are allowed to have them in class.

heh, i've done a bit of research on this in the past. Yes, they exist. No, they're not legal in any US state (FCC regulation).

There's a few different types of jammers, one jams everything in and out. This is equivalent to a faraday cage around the building, allowing no signals to pass. Selective jammers filter the signals and can pass or stop phones on a list (Whitelist teachers/administrators, and block any other device, etc).

They're big in Japan.... a lot of hospitals, movie theaters, restaurants, etc all use them.

I think a better idea is to teach people that just because they can, doesn't mean they should. There's a time and a place for phone conversations and the line where that's appropriate has been getting really fuzzy the past 10 years.

AGREED 100%. It IS the better ideal....and I wish parents would give us some help with that one.

Ok, to stir the pot a bit.. It starts at home, it starts with setting the example.

How many of you will place or take a phone call while in a restaurant?

What about chatting while in line at the coffee shop? Home Depot? Bank?

I don't want to hear the excuses, 'cause if it was THAT important, you'd be on the phone to 911. Food for thought. Rudeness taught is what is learned and eventually, becomes accepted behavior.

My phone has three buttons on the side. Two of them silence the vibrate (or ring, if it's on), and send the caller to voicemail. The middle one does nothing. I answer maybe 1/3 of the calls I get, i know they can wait.

Thanks guys!

It is incredible what the kids get away with these days and it all comes down to what the parents have taught them to expect It is their right to text their friend all during class and then expect the teachers to help them make up the work because they just didn't get it. My wife took a kids cell phone for 1 class period. He got 58 text messages in just under an hour while she had his phone. Later that year the shop teacher took his phone while he had a nail gun in his hand and nailed it to the wall. Of course the teacher got in trouble not the kid who is texting while using a table saw, go figure.

I disagree completely. I think my kid should be able to do whatever he wants, including texting in the middle of class. I expect teachers to fix all of my kid's behavioral problems in 7 hours a day, despite the fact the majority of those problems are actually caused by my bad/non-existent parenting the other 17 hours a day.
I also think I should be able to pay for my groceries or drive my car or sit in a restaurant while talking on my cel phone, because obviously my conversations are so important that they trump anything I might actually be DOING (and certainly anything YOU might be doing).
And for all you nay-sayers who are going to jump in here and tell me I'm wrong, I suppose YOU think that we would be better off as a society if we started teaching people (both kids and adults) to treat one another with a little more respect and consideration. Yeah, that's what I thought. Shows what YOU know.

For that one person who is certain not to get it, yes, I am being sarcastic. Very, very sarcastic. I sure feel like I am waaaay to young to have the whole "when I was a kid" thing going on, but I got it going on. Big time.

Sorry, touched a nerve there. I'll get off my soap box now. But not before I thank any and all of you teachers out there for doing what you do.
