Cataract Creek, AB

Just wondering if anyone has been out there within the last day or so. Just looking for a place where I can do a day trip, rather than driving out to Golden. The last time I've been out to Catarct was probably 5 yrs ago, which was the last time there was enough snow out there. I am hoping this past week has dropped enough snow?

Go to longview, turn west into kananiskis area and I believe there are signs. Last time I was there was in the summer about 5 years ago camping so I kinda forget..

turn west at Longview, 20 miles or so until you get to the gate blocking the road, turn left at the corner. There are two staging areas - cataract Creek camp ground and Etherington camp ground. Cat Creek is first (2-3 miles south of the corner) and ethington is another 5 miles south.

We were there 2 or 3 years ago now...

Wrost ride Ive ever had.

I was still fairly new to riding, but I was "mature" enough to tell.
Road was plowed all the way, the entire area was in the midst of being logged, and every where you rode off trail was nothing but stumps.

Id reccomend driving the extra 45 minutes and ride Corbin or something, for similiar type riding.

You got it backwards. You come to Etherington first. Cataract Creek is farther south.

IF YOU DRIVE TO THE END OF BOW TRAIL WEST, SOMEBODY SCORED SOME GOOD TRACKS THE OTHER NIGHT IN THE DITCH,BESIDE THE STEET ON THE NORHT SIDE, i WANTED TO JOIN HIM BUT THE WIFE FORBID IT.:confused:

IF YOU WERE TOTALLY NUTS,(AND UNTOUCHABLE BY THE LAW) THE OLD FORTRESS SKI AREA WOULD ROCK:D:D:D

Thanks for the updates guys, I think I will stick with Revy for now... prob can't make it out for a 3-4 dayer until end of Jan anyways....

Just got back, burrr.... really cold and barely any snow to make it worth while. Mostly rode the trails around Cataract, rode some logging roads and some open areas, but alot of stumps and trees everywhere. Maybe I was riding in the wrong place, but I really don't think its worth going out there again unless it gets another 3-4 feet....just my 2 cents

The Cataract area is generally for TRAIL riding only!!!! Generally safe, reduced avalanche risk (unless going over Fording Pass)If you venture off the trails you are asking for trouble. The Calgary Snowmobile Club conducts a trail sweep in October to clear rocks and debrie off of the trails. That being said I have been out there when there has been 3-4 feet of powder and the cut blocks were great...... you could count those times on one hand during the last 20 years. All in all you have to make it what you want.

Better than not riding at all.

Unfortunately, no. Why break your sled instead of riding where the snow is actually good? I was out there driving around on Saturday (jan 3) and there is no more than 1 foot at the bottom on the secondary highway, windblown on the ridge might be 2-3 feet but overall there is just enough snow to cover things and make what you would think a cheap and quick ride into a long and expensive ride (see smokindave's report on Page 2).
