Sorry for posting this twice. The first post accidently got posted under the M series thread.

Can anyone offer clutch advice or tell me where to look? The clutch on my spare sled died and since it's my spare I would like to learn how to work on clutches.

It's a 2002 600 Mtn Cat. It's been a great sled and has 3400 miles but the clutch died over Christmas after towing out two sleds.

The primary / driving clutch makes a bad grinding sound when pulling to start and after stopping the engine. The primary / driving clutch also continues to freewheel for several seconds after turning off the engine. I was told it might be the spider and / or clutch to engine shaft threads.

I live in the Denver metro area. I have a good garage with heat so if you are in the area and can help I will supply beer and food.

Thanks.

I also have a carburated 2004 900 Mtn Cat whose engine seized twice last year. After paying to have it fixed and die again I decided to buy another sled. It's still dead incase there is anyone who can show me how to fix it or wants to buy it.

Will a 900 clutch work on the 600?

The 900 clutch will not work on the 600. They have different ends on the crank, the 900 is a 33 mm taper and the 600 is a 30 mm. What's wrong with the 900? Sounds like the 600 clutch is shot. The first thing to do if u r going to rebuild it is to get it apart to inspect it. This can be quite difficult and requires special tools. Sometimes it just as cheap to buy a new clutch as it is to rebuild your old one.

Here's a new one that will fit your 600.

Thanks Sprocket for the details and link. Those are the details I need. I emailed the clutch seller and they have a clutch waiting for me if don't sell the sled first.

What kind of special tools are required to pull / replace the clutch on the output shaft? Something besides a big wrench?

The cluthces being sold are uncalibrated which I guess means they don't have springs or weights. Do I just order the stock ones again?

My 900 Cat melted the piston top clutch side last year after a MILE down the trail. A local mechanic fixed it and said he suspected bad gas. I found bad gas suspicous because I filled up at a large gas station, never had bad gas before and my 600 ran the same gas without problem. Either way, the mechanic said he tested the oiler and didn't notice any air leaks so he stuck to the bad gas.

After having the sled in the shop for a month while I waited on a new cylinder I finally got it back in March and went for another ride. Again, the same clutch side piston top melted down after a MILE!!! Wow was I frustrated. We drug the sled back and it's been sitting in the garage ever since.

Talking with some other friends, they suggested looking for a crank seal leak, carburator leak or stuck needle.

Any other ideas?

Kens Sports has 8" 30mm 6 tower clutches for $249. Weights will run you about 54 bucks and a spring 20 bucks. You will need a clutch puller to remove the clutch. Parts to rebuild the old 9 tower thats on your 600 will run about $180 if you can find them. Then you are going to need to buy or build a clutch holder, a special socket for the spyder jamb nut, a spanner wrench for the spyder and a torch to heat everything up.

I know the feeling. I bout a 900 and got .8 of a mile and it burned down. I figured it was a antifreeze bubble preventing the coolant from circulating. Ran fine this last weekend . . . until the plate on the back of my clutch worked loose and put a hole in my crank case:face-icon-small-sad. But if your carb boots have any holes were it can suck more air in it can lean it out and burn them down. also could be a power valve. :face-icon-small-con How much would you sell your 900 that is siezed for?

Thanks for the knowledge and time.

I sold my 600 and 900 Cats last night. They were good sleds and I am going to miss them.
