Carls Cycle cylinder porting and head mod

Has anyone had carls cycle cylinder porting an head mod done to their 09 D8? I was just curous if it is worth it or if it really wakes it up? Will i feel it in the seat of my pants? There is an option for case porting, can someone tell me what is done here and if it is worth the money? Will it still be reliable? I would use their fuel map and i would run an slp single, air intake and a clutch kit.
I am lookin to a little more to my D8, just wondering if this is the way to go?
If anyone can throw in any info on what they know about the kit/ any experience with the kit would greatly be appreciated!

Thanks

I had Carl's shave the head and do a cylinder port on mine and put in the fuel mapping. Me and one of my riding buddies bought our 09 Dragons at the same time from Carl's, we both have SLP pipes but I have the porting, head shaved and Carbon teck reeds and I can pull him at least two sled lengths in a 600-700 yard drag race. It is diffently not a Turbo but it will give you a edge over a stock sled with out spending $5000 grand.
All the guy's at Carl's are great to deal with and know the Polaris products well.

Is there porting and head shaving only good for above a certain elevation? Or is it good at sea level too?

If I remember correctly the flash for the porting and head mod is different than just the single pipe flash.
As far as the benefit at lower elevation benefit I think they have a setup for that as well.
With the head saved and the porting they also had be change the clutch setups.
I feel it is a pretty good mod for the money and Carl's setup was spot on.
The good thing about this mod is if you do decide to do a Turbo at a later date the you can sell or trade the head with someone else and the cylinder porting does not make any difference to the turbo setup is what I was told by Carl's.

Justin, Thanks for the reply...

Yea...Carl's setups are top notch and hard to out perform... they know the Polaris sleds like no other and have resources and access to all things Polaris that cant be outdone...

There was no "reflash", that I know of, for a single pipe (alone) for the 800's outside of custom Carls or the Polaris race program, at least not for the "average citizen" ... only with the porting package on the 800's (from SLP) is there a consumer available re-flash.... even though I'm sure there are some special-customers that have some access to this.

On the 800's the new flash is really the key to making more power... the baseline interpretations of the inputs (sensors) as well as ignition control are changed with optimal performance in mind rather than a best performance given that they need to meet ever increasing emissions standards...

The reflash IS the key to "real" gains IMO... and that can only be had, from what I know, with full porting packages from Carls or SLP (stage IV)

With the shaved head... is it still a pump gas setup or is some race-gas-mix needed?

liquid racing...

are you not interested in having the case ported as well as having the cyl?? after

my conversation i had with carls about having my 800 ported they said if the pockets

can support it....having the case ported as well gives you almost the equivalent

performance gain as with a slp exhaust vs stock sled.

just something to think about! i am getting both cyl and case ported along with ecu

flash. either way i have no doubt you will be very satisfied with the job done by carls

cycle. im very excited to try my set up out!! :)

maybe suitcase will chime in on his port jobs carls have had done....from 600cc to

800cc. everytime he said the porting wakes the sled up with a great big "HOLY

CHIT!!!" :)

Carl's had me run a gallon of 110 race gas when I first got it back because I was only riding at 4800'-6000' and wanted to be a little cautious against detonation at first. They have put a couple of different flashes in it for their setup that had nothing to do with the Polaris update flash.
I have since quite adding it and have not had any problems with detonation and have realy good plug color. I know it depends on how much they shave the head but if you let them know what elevations you are going to be riding at they will give you a recommendation on what you should do.
I was going to do the case port but if you decide to do a turbo they recomended not to do the case porting based on the info they had available at the time.
Like I said before it is not a turbo but it will give you a edge over a stock sled and not break the bank.

Are there any negatives i should know about when porting cylinders .planing on using carls. Im running a 2010 Assault w/slp intake / single pipe, and heel clicker clutch kit .. it seems like the compression is not what is should be... heard carls porting is the way to go??? trying to get as much bata as possible before we ship them out to carls.

I think the porting is a good idea. However, if you ever blow the motor and take out a cylinder it turns into a big waste of money. The mono block will see to that. If you have to run a race gas blend that could be viewed as a negative as well.

Did you already buy the heel clicker kit? I ran the drag & fly weights in 08. Got them to work pretty well. I had so much weight loaded on them that they started to develop a notch. They work, but not like Randy says they do. They function more like a teeter totter and you have to work around that.

There stuff works!!!
If you don't want to 'split' the motor, just do the top end.
If the motor has some miles on it - 'split' the cases and have everything checked out, and then have the cases ported.
Run exactly what they tell you and you will be VERY happy.

My sled came with the Carl's mods already done and I've never ran it against a stocker. IMO save up for a Cat. Maybe a Pro if your die hard Polaris but their not proven yet either. :face-icon-small-sho

Care to go into further detail? What is wrong with your setup?

For me the Cat Chassis doesn't come close to comparing to the Poo.

Was this a ported 800 or 840, 860 series BB?

Mines a cylinder ported 09 800. It's got a pump gas shaved head and Carl's ecu flash. I lost a PTO side piston skirt and it wasted everything else.
There's nothing wrong with the Carl's setup. It ran well. All I'm saying is I wouldn't put much mod money into this motor. I bought this sled used with this stuff already done. I assumed after the "update" these motors where as good as any manufacture. Their not. i.e. fuel mapping, piston clearance, electrical issues. I'm rebuilding it now with the taller pistons. Hopefully I get more than 600 miles out of these pistons.

I have a 09 800 slp full port, head, ecm. Ran really good until the pto cylinder skirt broke and toasted everthing but the mag side piston and that half of the mono block cylinder. Mag side looked like new! Want to buy a ported junk motor? I loved the chassis for back country riding.
Anyway I wont spend anymore money on this sled.

I have 2 09's and a 10 and wish I didnt have any of them, tired of polaris's crap!

But I've rode the new pro for 4 days and want one really bad, I have head problems! I wander if I can put an etec in the pro?
