Carls Big Bore 685??

Can anyone enlighten me on what the carls 685 consists of? The 660 just basically uses 700 pistons to make the extra power. Does the 685 require a different crank? A couple guys on here have them in their IQR's and it sounds like they absolutely rip! And how much work are they to fit into an IQR chassis?

the 600 uses the 700 rmk pistons, the 685 uses bigger ones but requires you to bore the upper case half, Which IMO needs to be done for the 660.

Plus the 685 uses ART pistons, very high quality. Upper crankcase modifications, stock crank. 685 is the funnest motor/sled I've ridden. I just put one together last week, it will eat my piped/clutched Dragon 800, no problem.

yeah i just picted one up and its fricken sweet. Just one slight problem i cant hold r's up in high elevation and in deep powder. Leaning twards weights as it seems to be very responsive and not boggy as if it were a rich condition. I have twin pipes and a 91 octane head and a 155 polaris track. Havnt pulled my weights out just yet but was just wondering what weights people found that work the best overall at 7-10 thousand feet. thanks

Hey Powderhound, who makes the pipes for this engine in the IQR? SLP?

Cool deal! Have you run any of his pipes?

Yup. Got one on my iqr with 600ho. Nicest looking pipe ive ever seen, the craftsmanship is top notch. He installs a choke in the end of the pipe, before the can, that can be changed out if you want to go from a 600 to a 660 to a 685 and so on.

We have 2 685's, one in an IQ and one in an iqr both run awesome day in and day out. Very reliable and consistent performers, I would recommend Carls any day of the week. They will out run the new 800's all day long. Just can't say enough good things about them, they changed the way I looked at big bores.

Anger have you had any first hand experience with both the 685 and 660? Was wondering how they compare. Anyone else have experience with both?

Hey Anger, are you running a single? twins?

Could anybody help me out with the above question? going to pull my primary apart and shave a gram of the weights and try that this weekend. any other ideas would be great thanks

I am running slp singles on both of our 685's, they run well and pull 62-64 gram weights with 64/44 helixs at sea level.

I have compared the 685 to the 660, a buddy has a 660 that is almost identical to my 685 in all things other than he has a dynoport pipe and his is a 660.

The 685 will pull his sled by about 1 sled. When we swap pipes, I pull away by 3 sled lengths.

This tells me a few things, mainly the 685 makes more power than the 660.

And The Dynoport pipe makes more power than the slp, but requires a little different clutching to work right.

If I was building another iqr with a 660/685, the cost of the neils power pipe or the dynoport would be worth the added cost.

Carl's has a fix for that, and it has nothing to do with the weights. It's a different helix, one they had custom made for their piped 700's. It's a 64/40 and a 62/38. The 64/40 angle is standard when the snow isn't real deep and heavy, more of when it is powder on a base (something we haven't had here this year) and the 62/38 is for deep heavy powder with no base. It works well, in fact I am going to gear back up a bit now. Elevation for this set up is 6,000' to 8,000'. We rode up to 8500' last Saturday out of McCall, and my 685 had no problems pulling and holding RPM's. Call Carl's and ask for Curtis in service, he will fix you up.
