Canine FHO surgery??

6 year old black lab i accidentally backed over her. She broke the ball in her hip joint. Vet says we can do a fho and remove the ball and let the muscle hold the hip in place. Or i can go somewhere else and have a surgery done with pins and screws not sure what that surgery is called. Anyone have any similar experiences. I know her hunting days maybe behind her now but i want her to make as good as a recovery as possible. I just want her to be comfortable as she will probably be a house and farm dog now and i will let her retrieve and occasional rooster from the road ditch. She is about 90 pounds. Is FHO a good option for a dog of this size?? Any info is greatly appreciated.

That is sad to read.

Hope it turns out as well as possible.

Give her an extra hug for me.

I went the other route with a heeler. It was a lot of work when he came home but worth it. Lots of metal stickin out and lots of cleaning but he came out awesome still had a slight limp as he was a pup but he still could run cattle with the best of em. If your commited to keepin him go to a vet that specializes and spend the money ( it aint cheap ) but worth it. I type this with two yellows under my feet! Good Luck

We have a beagle pup for a house dog that was pushed out of the pickup by a great dane/ mastiff cross. She broke her leg right obove the growth plate. My wife was a wreck so I shelled out the coinage for the surgery. She has had rods and pins for 2 months now and goes in this week to see if the rods are ready to come out. She uses her leg more and more every day. The vet said its usually succesfull especially if they are done growing. We left her at the vet for 2 weeks in a kenel after the surgery so she couldn't jump around and hurt her leg more.

Sorry for the long post but I hope this helps.

While the removal of the ball shape part of the hip sounds like it isn't most desirable, you can expect about 80-90% of the recovery if you were to go with the screw/plate.

They pretty much take a hammer and chissel at the bone. Pretty quick surgery (should be 2 hrs ish) and a bit quicker recovery.

I'll have to ask my lady again but pretty sure it's around $1500 for that

I'm very sorry to hear this. I ran over my lab and got lucky to the tune of around 5 grand and she's fine, still hunting but it was ankle not hip. I really hope this works out for you and your dog. Good luck and don't beat yourself up too much, things happen. Eric
