The rear set is just a couple of the rear idlers/bogie wheels connected by a shaft, but the front wheels are made of rubber and heavy duty. The design of the whole thing makes it easy to get the wheels on and off the front ski and makes it easy to ride the bike on most any kind of surface.

As I don't have the skill or the means to make a custom wheel kit, spending the $300+ for the wheels is worth it to me and they have paid for themselves several times over as it makes moving the bike simple. I know they will come in really handy once my enclosed trailer comes and I'll be using the wheels all the time to get the bike out of the trailer.
