camera

out of what you guys have seen or used, what is the best helmet cam?
or is a video camera with a aux. lens better? I have one of the early go-pros and I don't like the picture.

The HD GoPro has a great picture. Not that fishbowl look. Also takes 1080p video.

I love my gopro hero HD camera, it make good pictures at every 2 seconds mode at any speed and videos. I got rid of my old gopro camera!

FYI: it only work on window 7 or mac. (computer or laptop)

I have the POV 1 and it makes nice movies, but I will be getting the 110 angle camera for it. The 90 is a little small, my camrea has been updated to hold the 8 gig card and I would recomend going as big as you can on the memory, it is amazing how fast you run out of tape! Don't have it to compare to any other cameras, I'm sure there are many diffrent brands that work just as good or better.

Configurable

ContourHD gives you choices. Use the Easy Edit software to dial in your contrast (high, med or low), exposure (-4 to +4), metering (spot, center, avg), and the gain of the microphone, making the ContourHD the world’s most configurable HD wearable camcorder.

features4.jpg
Capture the Whole Scene

At 135 degrees, the ContourHD Wearable Camcorder lens strikes the perfect balance in capturing the entire scene without over-distorting the video.

features5.jpg
Hours of HD Video

An all-in-one HD wearable camcorder means there are no wires or tapes. ContourHD records to a removable, internal MicroSD memory card, capturing hours of HD quality video (compatible up to a 16GB Memory Card).

We believe video from within the action is better with sound! The ContourHD microphone does its best to keep the wind noise to a minimum while keeping the sounds of the ride rich. Configure the microphone on your camera to the action sounds you want.

I like the Contour HD because I don't feel like I'm wearing a box on my helmet.

You're right you're wearing a cylinder... :face-icon-small-win

I'm a GOPRO fan. I use it for more than sledding and am a big fan of the houseing.

look at the vids posted by the go pro vs the contour.

The pic is much better IMO from the countour and also has the ability to adjust settings for sunny days..clouds...etc. The volume settings can be adjusted as well.

Plus there is the whole big box sticking off the top of your helmet? You need to have the gopro in its plastic case while using on the snow. And if you get the tinest snow flake in there it fogs up.

Also with the contour turning the camera on and off can easily be accomplised while riding with a gloved hand. Heck I will be coming into a situation that looks good and without even stopping, reaching up and flicking the camera on.

Try that with the gopro...you can always tell a GP vid because it starts out with the person staring into the camera trying to make sure it was turned on. lol

Contour also has top notch customer sevice, (which i experienced first hand) a great line of accessories, editing software, video hosting and an online forum with great technical support.

For me it was a no brainer....Contour hands down!

Dizzle's vids are the best I've seen and I can't wait to try my new contour HD this year!

Helmet Cam info

I have owned all three of the major helmet cams and I am most impressed with the GoPro HD. It takes great video, good audio, is 100% waterproof, very easy to use, and the picture quality is amazing. Also the GoPro HD had tons of mounting options and additional hardware which gives you more options for different and unique camera angles. Also It is really easy to sync the GoPro with your computer and edit your footage. Great quality, great price, great camera.

My Contour HD was a good camera but it broke due to water damage (only from skiing). It was more difficult to find a good angle with the countour HD and the side mount always shows the side of your helmet in the final video. The POV's video quality isn't as good as the Contour or GoPro. The best thing about the POV is the mini displays which allows you to see what angle you are shooting before you start to record.

Hope this information helps!

Go-Pro fan here! It's very durable and takes great video and still shots too. Ours took a tumble down the face of a a steep slope with the sled last year and by way of a miracle we found it, unharmed! We will likely upgrade to the go-pro HD.

IMO the gopro's light sensor is...well...too sensative. Notice as the lighting conditions changes going thru the trees the brightness almost blinks as it tries to adjust. Plus the fisheye is so extreme it over distorts everything. It also always seems really dark in the corners?

The contour does have some difficulty with direct sunlight in high lighting situations. It puts a digital distortion across the screen for a second. Supposedly you can add a filter to solve the problem, but it really hasn't been that big of an issue.

They are falling in about the same price point, at least for the gopro and contour

$150-200 for the lower end models

$250-300 for the higher end models

What are your guys favorite places to mount besides the helmet? Are the other mounts they offer pretty sturdy?
