California's economy. This could get funny

If some how we could just move California to the east coast it would concentrate all the liberals and deadbeats in one area. We would have to haul it all the way around Cape Horn, it wouldn't fit through the Panama Canal.

I don't see how any of that is funny. They have one of the largest economy's in the world, and for them to be having those problems shows how tough the world's economic situation is in. This is much larger problem that immigration.

Los Angeles County lost a net 41,900 jobs last year and nearly all of them -- about 41,000 -- were in retail, manufacturing and construction, in that order. In January, retail shed 15,100 jobs, manufacturing lost 6,800, and construction, 4,800. The three sectors were caught in the collapse of the housing boom and recession.

To make matters worse, another key California industry -- the film business -- lost 22,300 jobs in January, leading L.A. County layoffs for the month.

So of those jobs how many do illegals take? Manufacturing they might have some, construction I will give you 50%. Retail, I would say very few and of the 22,300 jobs in the film industry, they have very little of those.

Most of the job illegals do are working for you and me as maids and gardeners. They also do construction and farm jobs.

Construction jobs take jobs from legal citizens, but when a year ago we were building houses for astronomical numbers, their "help" was needed. As a general contractor you couldn't find good help, even when paying top dollar.

There are not a lot of people that even when they are without work would be willing to sit in the sun picking fruits and vegatables. Does it make it right? No, but most people would rather collect unemployment rather than work in a field, and they will probably make more money doing that. (again not saying it is right, but it is a reality).

So to say the problems California is having is because of illegal immigration is silly, it is a far deeper cut.

Orange County is a stronghold of our conservative party. I have plenty of friends down there that are hurting right now. Plus some of the worlds best wine comes from California!

:wine::D:wine:

Don't worry about California, they already have the solution: legalize and tax pot. Not only will that increase tax revenue, it will bring a huge influx of quality people to the state, ready to work hard and turn around their economy! That is after they get something to eat 'cause of the munchies...

It is in all honesty a great idea. People are going to use it and it is a much safer drug than alcohol or tabacco.

could any of their own problems stem from the way of thinking down there? .00005 acre lots, 500 illegals standing at home depot every morning to work for cash, the most ludicrous smog/sound laws around, the "bling factor".........california is a lost cause. take out the top 5% and the illegals, then I bet they are not the larget economy. besides....................

to be considered an economy by me, you have to be able to pay your debts, otherwise you are relabled as a "liability"

Really? So with that thinking, the United States is not and economy; right?

California is responsible for 13% of the United States' gross domestic product (GDP). The state's GDP is at about $1.7 trillion (as of 2006). (wiki but backed)

California's economy is comparable to Spain, Italy and China.

California is ranked 10th for world economy's (CIA factbook).

California also pays more money into the Federal system than it receives. ;)

The pot idea is great. I would support that 100%.

As for why it is funny.
how many jobs could they create if they weren't paying hundreds of millions a year to put illigals thru school, pay their medical bills, addition cars on the roads, electrical use, the list goes on and on.

They are in huge trouble BECAUSE of thier liberal BS.
It is funny because it proves their BS is just that, BS.
The liberal central of the world is going down because of the liberals in charge.
Their world is about to explode and I for one find that hilarious.
Their policies and their "We're better than you" attitude have put millions of americans out of work over the years.
It's called carma, and it's a %itch.

It's funny as hell, oh how the mighty liberals have fallen. California, downgraded to junk status.

Everyone gets a small grin on their face, when the superior ones screw up. They've been preaching to the rest of the country for so long, that most can't remember a time when Cali didn't "lead the country by example".

Every time an illegal gets paid, it's money out of an American's pocket, simple enough. They do work American's aren't willing to do, for the pay offered. Raise the pay, and American's will take the jobs. I don't need cheap everything, I need employed Americans.

Now, your construction statement is really funny. Had Illegals not taken so many construction jobs, the house building market WOULD HAVE HAD TO SLOW DOWN. Possibly avoiding this LIBERALLY created housing burst. Think about it. If employees were short, pay would have increased, increasing construction costs, slowing building. Not to mention, white flight from older neighborhoods would have been slowed.

Vegetables can be picked by machine, if there's enough incentive to innovate. But, with cheap labor just laying around, farmers won't stimulate innovation. I know there's some farmers on here, buy my personal opinion is that farmers are the one's, that are (or were) rewarding illegals that come into the country. I know they had to, to complete, but in the larger picture, that's a collective excuse. The history of farmers, and it's effect on the country is quite interesting. I can't even imagine how I might spell that out, without hurting someone's feelings.

the last time a president called for immigration enforcement was something like 60 years ago.
The farmers that were screaming the loudest were Tomato growers.
Their claim was that without illigals to pick the tomatoes they would rot in the field. The entire industry would be destroyed.
Any of this sound familiar.
The government enforced the law anyway.
The farmers invented a tomato picker.
Problem solved.

Now for the flip side.
There are 10's of thousands of mexicans that desperately want the US to actively enforce the immigration laws. They would love to see an aggressive enforcement.

Why?
Because they come up eash year to pick crops. That is what they do. It is the only job they have or need. They make more in 3 months than they could make in a year back home. There are standing work visa's in place for them. If you got one last year, you are first in line to get one this year. That has created an entire work industry in Mexico. They want their visa's to work in the US. They don't want to stay, they arn't interested in bringing their families and arn't interested in becoming US citizens. They just want to come up, pick crops and go home.

Now since the steel industry collapsed. We've been living off prior generations for years now.

Wow, 12% of the US population, pays 13% of the taxes. Amazing. Maybe salary's make up the difference?

Nice comparison of California, to other semi (or full) socialist countries.

States receive more, if lots of social security drawers live in the state. Seems to me, lots of retired people are leaving the state. Pay versus receive ratios are also highly influenced by pay rates. Cali has higher than average pay, so higher than average income tax. It's really not something Cali does out of the bottom of their hearts.

Yep blame the farmers… Sounds all to familiar. Well all I can say is that due to the sensitivity of some crops, you can only harvest them by hand. Its often the smaller farms that cant afford a $340,000 harvesting machine that hire the non green card holding fellas. but that’s all right as I am a grain and green pea farmer, we have some really neat big toys for our harvest that only require experienced operators, so no illegals on my farm. :D Over all though I would have to agree with you guys, I am not a fan of illegals at all!

what... i did not expect that out of you?????

People from California are moving to other states and spreading their liberal plague like viruses that killed their host in search of a new one. Colorado will be the next to fall.

Well sorry, All my family are famers. I know all about time sensitive, hand worked crops. Looking back through history, to the beginning of the US, farmers are always the first to entice (loose term) some groups to come to this country.

I just find it interesting, that I'm a proponent of smaller government, and here we unfortunately need to create a law where farmers can't hire illegals, so we have a level playing field. And, let seasonally worker programs work.

Yeah I agree its crap that a law has to be instated for something that a proud American farmer should not do anyway. Why reward those who perform illegal actions such as just being here without proper permission and thus shorting people who are here legally.
