Cal Ripken baseball

Who has kids playing in this league this year? If they have played before...have your kids enjoyed the league? My son will be in Single A...he is 9.

Im not sure if I want to do the travel team...Im broke. Plus my son has a hockey camp this summer...it gets to be too much.

He is playing in two leagues though....Cal Ripken and city pitching machine.

Cal Ripken League? Must be like Babe Ruth League. I played BRL ball for 2 years, had a blast, aside from running bunches of meaningless laps around the outfield.

Yes Cal Ripken is the sister league to Babe Ruth....for the younger kids. I played Babe Rith too for 3 years...13-15 years old.

Ya my dad was the head coach...he made us run laps around the outside of the fence.

If your kid enjoys it I would do all I can to get him to play as much as he enjoys. I am 19 now and played traveling league since I was 6 and I still remember almost all of my games and play 4 times a week and every weekend and I would not trade it for anything in the world. Most of my good memories came from the baseball field, so as long as he enjoys it I would let try to get him to play but if it is just another hobby for him the traveling team may be a bit much.

Traveling league since you were six....damn. He does enjoy it now. I think I will wait on the travel team this year. He is doing 2 leagues....I think if he likes all of that this year...I will do the travel next year.

I agree with you....I enjoyed the hell out of baseball. A lot of good memories!

I loved the 2 years I played Babe Ruth, but I think we played once a week and some weekends.

Nowadays, well I'm praying my kids don't want to play traveling sports....got a bud with 2 kids in soccer and lacrosse. Poor bastage gets to his cabin for 3 gauranteed trips each summer and ends up hoping the team gets knocked out of the playoffs first round. Just gets to be a bit much, especially when you look at how many kids will actually go along way in the sport.

MPS, don't over do it with your kid.

Hockey and traveling baseball is too much.

Remember, he is just a kid, and probably wants to have time to do "kid stuff" in the summer as well.

We stepped up our boy to Traveling baseball this summer (He is a 10 year old).

36 games, plus tourneys, plus practice............... I am beginning to think I should have kept him in the normal district team (8 games then playoffs)

I am getting p'd just thinking of how we are going to miss out ion ALOT of weekends at the cabin this summer.

Not lecturing, just be careful of burn out on BOTH hockey and baseball.

did the cal ripken thing...as a kid, all-stars travelling etc. etc. LOVED it, and enjoyed the heck out of it...

Am coaching now, my son likes it, but he likes it more for hanging with buds...will be in same boat as you are taking, let him do more if he wants...

is interesting to see the kids at the "rookie" league and how divergent the talent is...I ahve a few kids on my team that are better than most two leagues up from them...

Thanks Jeff, I have the same concerns.

I have coached also...just helping this year. The talent is definitely divergent! I can't believe the way some of these 9 year olds (single A) are hitting and others can barely make contact. Those ones should stay in the rookie league to gain some confidence.

agreed....dont want it to be too much....regular and traveling hockey was a lot last season. That got hard at times.

Was just talking about this with a co-worker...we are both a little forward, and give each parent essentially homework to work with their son on....and it is incredible to see the difference that just spending time with their kids during the week makes in their over-all skills...one week, and dad throwing twice during the week, makes a HUGE change....

I definitely concur with that! When I coached I said the same things to parents....he/she needs to work on this away from practice.

Thanks! :D He is huh!? The ball he took on the back of the shoulder was whizzing. The pitcher was 2 years older...the pitcher was 11. The pitcher did feel bad and went to say he was sorry. Ryan shook it off and took his base....atta boy. :D
