BVconservation.org trying to get 1.6mil acres locked up by President Biden in Southwest Montana and all of Island Park

People just don't understand that wildlife gets along just fine with motorized users. There are several studies I've read that show that animals are largely unbothered by motorized vehicles, especially when compared to their reactions to people on foot.

As for preventing development, this is already forest land anyway. In some rare cases the government may do land swaps (on a much smaller scale), but only if it benefits the forest to do so, such as situations that would improve public access. Selling off public land to private interests is extremely rare and extremely difficult. Nowadays people are pretty well informed and any time something like this is proposed there is quite a bit of public outcry.

Most, if not all, of the developed areas or potential future developments are on land that has been private for a very long time, mostly formerly owned by logging companies or ranches. A wilderness area or national monument would do nothing to prevent these private lands from being developed. That's all up to the public to speak out like what Island Park residents have done recently to prevent the developments on the Flats.

I read up on it a little bit, it's REALLY, REALLY, BAD for our sport. This map shows the extent of the plan. It's not just IP, it would also turn ALL of the riding areas into wilderness all the way From Bozeman through IP. Madison-Gallatin National Wildlife Monument Map.png

I figured it was, based on replies. I haven't had a chance to watch the video yet.

I'm one of those millennials whose phone stays on silent 99% of the time, especially in public, so I dont watch videos unless I'm at home.
TOTALLY UNDERSTAND!!

If I remember correctly, doesn't bca donate and advocate for these kind of thing and getting rid of motorized vehicles, in areas, if I'm wrong you can correct me on it. I thought I read that somewhere

I'm not sure BCA does, as they have a lot of snowmobile-oriented product. I used to have a list somewhere and I don't remember them being on it. Could be wrong though.

Maybe it's Black Diamond you're thinking of? I seem to remember they were hard-core environazis; I can't think of anything with BCA. Anyway, I plan to chip in, but is there any more concrete information on this? As in, is this something that's been in motion and we're just finding out? And who's shutting it down and by what authority? While there are far too many avenues to shut down public lands (like dropping a Wilderness Study Area), they don't happen overnight, and I'm surprised we're just hearing about it if this is as far along as it sounds. I'm not saying it's not happening - I'm sure Brandon (actually, the radicals behind his empty suit) will do everything in their power to pull this kind of stunt in their closing days, whether it's legal or not - just looking for as much background as possible so we can find ways to fight it.

National Monument is pretty easy to designate compared to other closures like Wilderness and the process for Winter Travel Management. Biden can do it with the stroke of his pen, and there's not much citizens can do about it. But he's getting pressured for all sorts of silly things to do on his way out the door (like resigning early so Harris could claim first female president), so who knows what he might try.

Read up on the Bears Ears monument, it was signed into existence by an Obama executive order less than a month before Trump took office. Very similar scenario. Trump did reduce the size of the monument by quite a bit, but Biden then reinstated the original boundaries (1.3 million acres).

The organization promoting this has also successfully gotten 2 other national monuments passed in Oregon

You guys might be right on the black diamond, I'm by no way trying to talk bad about bca. Hopefully this doesn't happen. Especially for the people who live and work out there

BACKGROUND INFO on trying to CLOSE ISLAND PARK’S MT. JEFFERSON….

Mt. Jefferson is a nationally renowned, world-class high mountain snowmobiling area, where snowmobilers of all abilities can find a challenge and enjoy scenic splendor. This area is in the Beaverhead Deer-lodge Forest in Montana but is readily accessible from the Idaho side near Island Park. Mt. Jefferson is important to local snowmobilers and the economies of adjacent Idaho Communities. Most of Mt. Jefferson use originates in Idaho. There have been many attempts to close the area to snowmobiles but the Idaho State Snowmobiling Association stood with the Fugowee Snowmobile Club to ensure that snowmobilers are allowed to enjoy this amazing resource. We made the case during the Forest Planning Process that snowmobiling was a legitimate and valued use on Mt. Jefferson. The Forest Supervisor agreed and left the southern portion open to accommodate snowmobiling, however, it clearly states that it will remain open if there are not incursions into the adjoining non-motorized area.Litigation followed, ISSA intervened on behalf of the USFS and we were successful. Following that, an attempt was made to designate Mt. Jefferson as Wilderness by Senator Tester. It went nowhere! The Idaho Delegation has been a loyal supporter of our efforts to keep snowmobiling on Mt. Jefferson. Most snowmobilers are responsible users of our public lands who respect and follow the rules. However, in every user population there is an irresponsible elect that does not respect the rules. ISSA printed signs for the area and had a radio campaign in the area urging snowmobilers to stay within the boundary. Although successful, many riders continued to ride in the closed area. The Forest made the decision to hire winter staff to patrol the area. Although expensive, it has worked. ISSA has donated yearly.ISSA is committed to doing everything needed to keep Jefferson open for this and future generations.

Black Diamond has a long history of supporting the Winter Wildlands Alliance. I think they're trying to distance themselves from that history now.
