Buying a viper with all the extras or not?

Does the viper need all the bells and whistles? I have one dealer telling me they can install a turbo on a new viper 162 for $15500. I have another dealer telling me that he can do the same thing but will cost an extra $1500 cause it will need clutched, gauges and a quality install. I do realize that it will need re-clutched after the turbo but does it need the air fuel gauge, boost gauge etc...? All I want to do is run the mpi turbo that Yamaha offers and installs. I don't plan on adding any extra horse or turning up the boost, if I do I will install the proper gauges and stuff. Bottom line, do these machines need the extras if you are running the turbo that Yamaha offers. Thanks
 
You definitely want a boost gauge, over boosting is the enemy. You don't need an AFR gauge. Route your intake with a snorkel up top. What other whistle and bells are they talking about? It's a simple kit but you can go wild on it if you go more than 5 1/2 to 6 psi.

I have the low boost MPI kit. It really wakes things up and the sled itself is amazingly balanced.

You might consider a Turbosmart Boost-T to adjust your waste gate since the kit doesn't self adjust changes in altitude/temps/etc.

The trail turbo kit is 4.5 boost and has electronic boost control and it has been said nothing special is needed. Please note I have not tried one yet just going by what has been posted. Of course gauges are a good thing.
 
yamaha demo mpi vipers had nothing for gauges. imo mpi 190 kit does not need gauges, but they deff are personal preference for me, i like to have boost, afr, and usually throw a fuel pressure gauge under the hood.
 
I would say no to the additional bells and whistles. I suspect the dealer is trying to drum up additional business.

The Yamaha warranty covers the sled with the factory kit and if it malfunctions and damages the motor, the warranty should cover it. In fact, if you have additional add on's and there is a problem, there is a chance that they would say that the additional items voided the warranty.

If you choose to add additional boost, I would say that it would be a good idea to add all of the bells and whistles. I expect most people will run the stock kit until the warranty is up and then add more boost. Even though the motor is rock solid and reliable with boost, that warranty is a big deal and most people wouldn't want to void it.
 
That's exactly what the dealer wants to do is charge for the additional stuff. I know I could install the turbo myself but I know if there is any warranty problems it wont be covered and that particular dealer will make sure of it cause he didn't get to install it. I know how the game is played.
 
If your dealer is selling you a turbo installed than setup like clutching should also be included. The rest of the stuff isn't needed IMO.

I'm a gauge advocate. Basically you never look at them until there is an issue, with gauges you can tell what's going on the hill which helps in the shop later plus nobody ever stays low boost for very long. As we all know boost is like crack. Add them on and be done with it.

I always opt for gauges and install all ours with at least a boost gauge. This way the customer and the dealer can make sure it's in a safe operating range.
Those kits don't come preset for 0' altitude and 10k feet, it's impossoble due to atmospheric pressure differences. So the only true way to know is with a gauge in my opinion. They are cheap, easy to install, and a great running tool to ensure accuracy of each kit and setup for the customer.
Afr gauges are nice and we offer as a option if wanted. I run one all year and fiddle with the fuel box until I find a safe box setting for our altitude and boost levels and pass that onto the customer. As we know though, a lot of people play with the boost setting and then it's a must to have.
Don't get me wrong, if someone doesn't want them it's their choice, however I think they are a cheap and easy tool to have on the sled to maximize your sleds potential and protect it from harm. It's a large investment and most guys are paying over 15k for these, a $100 is nothing to add to the bill.
 
yup boost gauge for sure should not be without one,a/f gauge & fuel pressure are for trouble shooting or tuning.
 
Looks like Im getting one next week. Will have the dealer install the turbo and will have to find myself a boost gauge to start with and then figure out clutching for high elevation.

What is everyone using for a boost gauge, I found some digital ones on ebay for about $25 that seems to be ok. I also found some manual boost controlers, are they needed for this kit? May need to find an air fuel gauge later on. Like I said in the first post for now Im going to run it at the 180 horse setting but later will have to go higher as that's just how we are.
 
I had the same problem, I know I wanted to read pressure or vac so I got a gauge from EVO and a handle bar bracket from CPC in Utah I believe, The basic air box has a stubb that is blanked off with tubing, thanks to MPI, did not need a boost controller just yet but after running it on the lift I already need more:face-icon-small-ton this is my first turbo after riding for a couple weeks now:face-icon-small-win
 
Missed that it's a mechanical one, goes up and down on pressure alone, but you can wire it for lighting if desired
 
Got a oil rollover valve coming to, rolled my apex 15 times I'd guess but not a problem but I would like to be damn sure!
