Buying a Vehicle through Ebay

Who here has bought a car, truck through ebay and what was your experience doing it? I am looking for a Duramax and a couple of importers i have talked to say don't do it. Looking for any response, good or bad.

I have bought 2 trucks via Ebay - The first was a 2000 Ford F250 4 door V10 - bought only based on pics on Ebay - talked to the guy on the phone to get the story and kinda a feel for him - flew to Denver to get it - he picked us up at the airport in the truck - went to his place of business, signed the papers and drove it home to Boise. Great transaction, great truck, nice guy - very happy.

Second one is a 2002 Ford Excursion, found it on Ebay but noticed it was from an Idaho dealer, so called them and dealt with them directly instead of over Ebay. Was able to get them to pull the listing and sell it to me at a much reduced price from what they had it listed.

Love Ebay and will buy more off of there.

:) T

This past october i imported an 04 explorer and an 06 chev diesel. no problems with ebay whatsoever.

just bought a 06 gmc crew cab with lots and lots of extra's.. everything was as described and as the pictures were..

I have also bought 3 harleys on ebay and sold 2 trucks, 2 bikes, 3 sleds..

haven't had a problem..
I think it does a person a lot of good to do a lot of research, call them, talk with them a couple differernt times.. ask a lot of questions over different conversations.. make sure their story is legit.. and you shouldnt have a problem IMO

Before you go through the PITA of importing, buying off ebay, etc, I would shoot some offers to your local guys selling trucks you are looking for. None of the big crap is selling right now and many guys are desperate to unload....

I'm one of the guy's who has a horror story for you...

Last year I won an auction for a 1999 Freightliner. The auction ended at 3am central time and it was no reserve. The winning bid was for about $6000 and the seller required a $2000 deposit within 24hrs. No problem, I Paypaled the money right over. I had the guy's cell phone #, e-mail address, business address...everything. I felt like it was a done deal.

He received my deposit and then said, "I can't sell you the truck unless you can pay a few thousand more". I declined and then he got all pizzy with me. I said just send my money back and we can forget about it. He wouldn't do it because he said he had too much invested in running the auction and paying Paypal's fees...blah, blah blah.

Paypal and ebay would not help me out. They simply said "we bring buyers and sellers together...all other issues need to be worked out among yourselves"! I was sooooo mad.

So I flew to Charlotte and I met the guy right at his business. He was stunned and he wasn't so mouthy anymore. It turns out he couldn't sell the truck to me because he had a lien on it. I ended up dealing directly with the financing company and I paid the truck off. I drove it back to Minnesota and I sold it the following week for a nice little profit.

Even though I made money I would not do it again. I honestly thought I lost $2000 to this guy and the stress of all that was just not worth it.

Thanks for the reply's. Good to hear all the positive experience's.
Jaynelson i have contacted dealers in my area and have kept a close eye in the truck trader and bargain finder for almost 6 months now. The bargains and deals haven't happened yet. Would love to spend my money locally, can't justify spending an extra 10 -12K difference on the same product.
High gas prices have definately affected the sale of full sized trucks, it just seems the effect has been more dramatic down south than in oil rich Alberta.

I bought a Duramax with only 60 k from a dealer in Salt Lake City and got screwed. I learned a very big lesson. :mad:PM if you want the crooks name. The dealership was not honest with what they advertised. eg: cloth interior when I bought leather just for starters etc. etc. I now have 68 k and want to sell it.

bought a 96 aurora off ebay two years ago, got fuked.ran great for about 50 miles. Paid 1600 for it with high miles, i didn't do my research. If i'd had known those 4.0L northstars were prone to bad heads that can't be fixed, i'd had ran. I wouldn't be afraid to buy a newer vehicle off there, but not an old beater.
