Buying a sled outside WA

Thinking of traveling to purchase a new sled. The deals around here suck, at least for G4s. Anybody know how the process works when you register an out of state sled in WA? DOL site says they charge you based on the model year of the sled. I'm assuming they mean they assign a value for calculating sales tax based on the model year, and ignore the bill of sale value, because registration cost is not based on value. Anybody know the scoop?

Bill of sale unless it looks fishy (way under priced) then they may go off of book value. Just note on bill of sale as damaged and as is. No questions then. All sleds have some damage right?

If you buy in Oregon . The tabs are 20 for 2 years and you are not required to pay tax . My buddy bought a 154 x 850 for 13800 plus 100 .
Yes you can ride with or tabs . I agree the deals suck in December this is when delalers make their winter money . If you buy in September there's way better deals .

If the sled comes with a title from another state they will just verify it against the information listed on the bill of sale and give it to you to keep for your records since WA doesn't have titles on sleds. The sales tax is calculated based on the information listed on the bill of sale if purchasing from a private party; they didn't pull book on mine when I registered it in WA. Other than that they will have you register your sled for the year, so toss another $58 on top of the fees for transferring to WA.

He has to pay sales tax in Washington in order to get washington tabs. Oregon tabs are not honored in Washington or washington tabs are not honored in Oregon anymore. Sales tax will be payed on the amount on the bill of sale. I have bought my last 3 new sleds in Oregon, just bought a new one this year. I paid $13600 then brought my bill of sale from the dealer to the department of liscensing and paid state sales tax on the $13600 plus liscense and fees. So long story short you do not save any tax or fees by buying out of state, that is if you want to be legal and have washington tabs on it.

Just a clarification that Washington and Oregon still do recognize reciprocity of each the others sled registrations. It is the Snopark permits that you need Oregon in Oregon and Washington in Washington.

You'll have to pay sales tax or use tax on the purchase price or book value.
Like said above.
If you pay sales tax in another state, the amount paid will be credited towards the wa tax bill. Even if you owned it for a year or years, first wa reg they get you on a use tax, basically 10% what the sleds worth, minus any proof of tax paid elsewhere.

Fwiw, the fish cops are hungry for sled reg violations, so if you go to any of the more popular snow parks, chances are they'll be there at some point, collecting their quota.

ya they do but show up with wa plates on your truck and see if that still applies, same on quads, must have residence in Oregon for that to work, I know as a few quads only have or tabs on them as only use them in dunes same with rzr ya 10 bucks for 2 yrs there. we got checked a few yrs ago and got a warning on a quad with or tabs here in wa.

You are correct. I was responding to Cascadesnowjunky in that Washington tabs are honored in Oregon as in Washington riders riding there. It isn't like Idaho or Montana where you have to buy a non resident sticker to legally sled there.

Like you say it isn't legal for a Washington rider to just buy an Oregon tab though and not pay sales tax and Washington tab and ride it in Washington. They do followup on out of state tabs on snowmobiles in Washington plated vehicles.

These kind of posts are great! Support the dealers outside of your state so you can drive and save a few bucks! Then complain that your clutches were not cleaned, your setup wasn't done correctly, and nobody wants to help you with warranty! Good luck! Oh yeah don't forget most dealers didn't get as many sleds as they wanted. This means dealers discounting sleds are usually the ones that have a hard time selling them anyway.

I don't believe anyone is complaining that clutches aren't cleaned or set up wasn't done correctly. I'm sure there is more than one dealer in the world that can do this. I believe the complaint was the local deals suck. Maybe the buyer is looking to buy the new sled from a private party and the deal is right. I'm a fan of buying locally but it doesn't always work out.

I came to my senses and decided to buy a G4 from I-90 Motorsports. Not the cheapest option, but its worth paying a little more to buy from a shop that's been giving me great service over the years. Thanks for the reminder.

Thats awesome! We appreciate your business, and continued support! You bought an amazing new machine! We are working on a couple new tuning Items on these hope to have some more info after our winter break!
thanks again!

I won't buy as much as a clutch button from i90, everytime I have been there I have been treated like crap, they lost my order, parts didn't come in as promised. Plus the prices are terrible. I think it's a good idea to buy out of state or private party. Why should you support a local dealer that treats you like garbage and rips you off??

sounds like a horrible experience, what did you order?

My friend just bought a 2014 XM Doo from I90. They said it has a "multipoint complete service" and was in excellent condition. Well... it was not excellent condition... the spark plugs were the same ones from when the sled was new, and running on one cylinder, all grease fittings dry, and scratches and cracks in plastic. Total BS from sales guy.

Also... regarding buying a sled from outside Washington, make sure if it comes from a state with titles for snowmobiles (unlike WA) make sure you have the title and current registration. I bought a sled from a guy in MT and he didn't ever register it the last couple of years. Registering it in WA was a pain because the registration wasn't current. Seems weird I know but they had problems confirming that the previous owner actually owned the sled because he never registered it? Washington DOL is a pain in the *** so just make sure you're ducks are in a row before you go in.

The other problem I had was buying a sled from some a lazy *** in Spokane.. who bought it initially in Idaho. He never registered it, therefore the state never had "proof" that he owned it so they said. Even though he has the bill of sale... if it wasn't registered in WA (and tax paid) they tried to impose a penalty for me. BS I know. I protested it and spoke to a manager and they let me register it with no penalty.

Always an adventure with the state of WA. :(
