Burning thru Belts.. Need Help

I have a MXZ 600 stretched out to a 144. I go thru about 3 - 4 belts a year, I only put on about 700 - 1000 a year, so I am not getting full usage out of my belts, but I think there is something causing the going thru belts so fast?

Any ideas?

I would check your alignment and belt you may need to run a better belt by using a harder belt softer wear faster, how are you venting, i have a 800 HO 144 and i ride about 800miles and went thro 1 belt last year. this year i just took the side off my cluch cover and drilled holes in the top if it to keep them cool and may look at some side panel vents.

how are you blowing them if you are just shreading them it is most likley the alinment in your cluches but if you are flat out blowing them apart your engine may be to far ahead causing the belt to be to tight putting strain on it causing it to blow apart

it will eat belts if it still has mx gearing and clutching [geared to tall, solid pins and short black spring in secondary all for lake running] thats were i would start

i have a 02 summit x 800 and i blew up 2 belts last year one was the belt that was in the holder for 3 year when it wasn't running and the second happend to me when i was rideing a river. i just fegured that the first belt blew cause it was old and hasn't been moved for 3 year. the second some of the guys that i ride with think was because my clutches wheren't alined right. so what i did for that was put a little spacer on my secondary that gives it about .25" of room to floot
so if this works i'm not sure but as of now i haven't blown any belts:D

What belt are your running?

The "127" belt is the ticket. I get years on a belt with a 151.

Yup.:):beer;

What belt?

What gearing and clutching?

You should clutch and gear it more like a Renegade or Summit.

600's with a 24 top gear won't have enough poop to pull that track.

check your towers on your primary clutch. My buddy was blowing a belt the last three times he went out but today we took his clutch apart and one of the towers was snapped but you couldn tell just by looking at it.

Good Luck!

If the alignment is fair to decent and you are blowing belts, what is another entity that you can measure that causes this belt event to happen ?
*Temperature*
Have you noticed the belt temperatures are hot enough to not be able to touch your clutches?
Do you smell burning rubber?

If you have observed high temperatures, im going to take a stab at it is your overall clutch calibration. Knowing the mxz has a 160/300 black secondary spring, I would start to see if you can clamp the belt better/harder through the clutches.
There are several secondary springs available. Each one will exert a higher clamp force on the drive belt to reduce belt slip.

I can tell you from experiences that changing out the secondary spring to a stronger one will lower heat.
As an example a clutch kit I have for some of these 600 summits, we remove the red 135/300 and install the purple 225/300. Temperatures reduce, rpm fluctuations reduce, backshift signal is enhanced.

You could start your journey to learn how to reduce heat by changing out the secondary spring and go and test to see what happens.

I too made a spacer for the secondary on my '02 700 and belt seems to be holding up much better.
