Blow-off
You are correct on the origin of the noise, it is excess air escaping from the charge system. When the throttle butterflies close the charge air has to go somewhere... whether it be out a blow-off or back out the compressor housing, the sound is very similar either way. You are also right regarding blow-off employment, I built his RG with and PG with out. We did however test with and without on both units at various times throughout the season. And with respect to your riding style question (on and off throttle..), no thats not by necessity, modern turbos can be ridden in much the same fashion you ride a natural.
