First off considering to different bikes atm.

KLX 450: 4k$

2008 KLX 450R, 259 kms, new battery, stripped Air Box, Race Reeds, Yosh Exhaust, Moose Bark Busters. This bike is new at half the price $4000.00 and an animal in the bush. No work needed!! Just push the start button and TEAR IT UP

KX 450f: 2007 approx 4k$

Bike is in excellent shape and I am the 2nd owner. I bought the bike in 2008 from the owner of Bowcycle and was barely ridden, so it was basically new. It was my hobby bike as I am 40yrs old and love the sport. It was never raced nor ridden in the bush. I dismantled the frame regularly to regrease the bearings and go over the bike. I only use Motul synthetic oil and do regular oil changes. Stored in heated garage and washed after every ride. Details of the bike include: - Full Enzo suspension front and back - Pro Taper bars - Pro Taper throttle tube - extra original number plates - extra decal kit - extra air filters - new chain and sprockets (extras as well) - new brake pads I haven't used the bike much in the past 3 yrs, maybe 3 rides a season so it has been lightly used. I have too many hobbies and a young family so I guess it's time to sell it.

Road and raced mx bikes for 30+ years but I have been away from for few years. I am looking for a bike to hit the small stuff on track and maybe some trail riding in summer and really considering building a snow bike. Would ride the fields around home and possibly take it to revy.

I have been lurking this section for awhile now and have a basic grasp of what it takes to build a bike. Any input would be great.

What would it take to build either of these bikes into a decent snowbike....parts and cash to buy them? pegs? airbox mod? MH kit? hand warmers?

I assume the klx will have slightly less power and a wider gear ratio but have some bonus of more electrical power available. Headlight is not that big of a deal but handwarmers would be handy.

How are these motors(in bikes) handling this abuse. They where never really designed to be held wide open for hours on end? Hard to hold throttle wide open during summer months for 5 min runs!

What about starting them in deep snow? I think the e start would be very handy?

I will come up with more questions as I go but this is a good start.

Look in the classified section and you will find a kawi 450 that is all set up for winter. It is being sold from the dealer in wisconsin, snowbikekits.com. might be worth giving them a call. The kx is the better choice due to the close ratio tranny.

Find a KX450 2009 or newer (for FI)... shouldn't be that hard. Standard upgrades for me are risers, pegs, barkbusters, thermostat, exhaust, handlebar bag, tunnel bag, 3gal gas tank. There are others you can do but all my bikes have had those options.

As far as motors go I wouldn't even worry about it. There have been bikes that have blown up but I don't think it's anything that can be attributed to winter use. These motors are very durable. Air quality is awesome as long as you can keep it free of moisture so always be weary of your airbox. If you want to go cheap and effective just get an un-oiled filter and put your Timbersled pre-filter over it. Take the filter out after rides and make sure it dries out.

sno bik'en

1 you don't hold a sno bike wide open for hours

2. efi isn't the answer to much, your 450 kwack will work just great

3. buy a kit and ride and see what snow conditons you're in all the time, let that determine further mods

4. the bike model isn'nt as critical as learing to ride a sno bike and finding someone to ride with

Your carb will work great. They work better than stock EFI's. You can jet it and be spot on. No oil fuel issues etc. EFI's spend a lot of $$$ trying to jet like you can in seconds for pennies. Need any halp, PST, my self, and others will be glad to help. FYI,..... all the pro riders from the company, "timbersled" have been riding carb bikes, and winning everything...... Top five Schweitzer hill climb, top snowcross, etc.... all carb bikes.... jetted spot on!!!

Any 450 MX bike will be a blast for you. Make and model don't really matter. You will have more fun than you can imagine! Whenever you need help, just ask. We all, together, will get you ripping and having a blast! Don't hesitate to ask. good luck! keep us posted!

My 2 cents

Carb works fine. Four strokes are easy to jet. Efi can over fuel because the cold makes the bike run rich(choke) alot. Some guys complain about fuel in the oil because of this. Hand warmers are a must. Also I wouldnt go without estart. If you on a side hill and you stall it can be really hard to kick over. No matter what bike you use make sure you go with a timbersled kit. They work awesome.

Sounds good.

Found another decent deal.

2009 yamaha yz450. VERY low hours on bike (maybe 15) still original tires. Only used twice in the past 2 years as I just don't have time . Fork seals were replaced in may. Asking $4200 obo

How the heck did someone get the Reeds into the 4stroke?

Hmm what about a KTM?

have a very nice 2008 KTM 450 sxf dirt bike it runs great. Electric start fmf pipe, scorpion skid plate and much more, never raced or abused. Has low hours. Really one of a kind bike, 4000 Obo will also entertain trades..... Battery is getting week, that's all it needs. Come take a look. 1403 505 9422. Prefer email as I'm often working.

pic of hour meter say 39.3

How hard is it to remove hour meter? Just wonder how accurate these meters really are?

Any of the race bikes will be a good bike to have. I believe 09 YZ is the first year they turned the motor around in the chassis? The bike is a strong runner but the only drawback is the intake since it's above the radiator in the shrouds of the bike. Some people have reported issues with snow ingestion but I know a couple guys who have modded the box to cut down on the snow intake.

09 Yz is the old style. Not turned around. And it is carbed.
And does work good as a Snowbike. Have had 3 set up as snowbikes
Either cut open air box so you can clean snow out of airbox or pod filter

Build price:

4k bike
5.5k TS kit
900 rekluse
300$ random parts.

11k ish for a snow bike. I would love to try one but at that price could prob just by a cheap 2 smoker.

I have yet to see any really good deals on used kits.

Probably more then I want to spend in the end for another toy.

The Rekluse is 100% absolutely NOT mandatory. They are cool in the snow and WAY COOL in the dirt... but if you want to save yourself some coin just skip it.

Now...aren't ya glad you talked yourself outta that? :face-icon-small-win

Picked up a clean 09 KX 450F. Thinking about putting a MH on next year. Looking forward to getting back on a bike. Always good deals this time of year but now I have to stare at it all winter. Hopefully a few nice days left this fall to go for a rip.

Buy a bike kit and say goodbye to that Nytro!! You'll go places you never thought you would!! I have a friend that put a kit on a 06 YZ 250 and he said it ruined snowmobiling for him! He goes places now he wouldn't have dreamed of with a sled. And his Nytro MTX turbo sits with 62 miles on it!

On the other hand, I really like my berg570 with efi. My old bike was a ktm525 and had carb ice issues about half the time. Never tried carb heat though.
