broke my steering post on a 2003 RMK in the Whitney area this weekend. in talking with a local dealer this monring (the only one open this early), sounds like it's going to be an expensive repair ($400)!!

anyone have any suggestions that would make this fix cheaper??

don't put a stock one back in. Slp makes one so Does wildchild on here. I'm betting 1/2 the repair price was parts other labor. U could do it yourself. Or keep calling around and c if u
Can get it done cheaper

where did it brake at? Up high or down low?

up high, but luckily I felt it give way so I eased up to avoid snapping it completely off. from that point on, I babied it to get back to the truck. it didn't help that we came in from Coalville.

problem is, I need it by Friday morning - we're leaving for a cabin trip this weekend.

the stock post is only $114. the expense is the labor to pull the engine. While Tri-City says pulling the engine will take 2.5 hours, their labor rate is $97. Mountain High motorports rate is $80/hour but they are estimating the job at 4 hours. I stopped by Weller's on our way back to SLC on Sat and they didn't have time. Grrrrrr.....

I'm not sure I could do it myself... I've never pulled an engine and would be mostly worried about the realignment to avoid future problems on the hill.

2 hours is more realistic. You can actually chnage the post in about an hour. It is not that hard to do. You do not even have to "pull the motor" but you do have to unbolt it and tip it forward a couple of inches to get at the lower steering post mounting bolts. It can be by most anyone pretty easy. Boils down to if you have more time, or money. Do not try to just weld it up in place. Change it out.

2 hours would be fast, I can't do them that fast, more like 3-4 hours for me. But regardless, as theultrarider says the motor doesn't have to come out, just be tipped.

I've got time to do it Wed evening if you chase the parts, I'm in Riverton. If you want to have me do it call me at 801-577-6444.

I did mine without tipping the motor but I did have to pull the carbs, reed cages, airbox, etc and it took 3 hours. If you have fat fingers or little patience, hire it out.
