good evening everyone, hopefully yours went a little better than mine. my christmas morning brought a nice gift... my summit left me walking.

tore it apart tonight hoping for the best bust expecting the worst, found somewhere in the middle, i think. i'm not sure if the person i bought it from had the ring update or not but my 04 800 broke a ring in the pto side and made a mess on the way out. the lower end appears to be allright but the piston and jug are junk. where do i go from here? oem parts and put it back to stock or is now a good time to make it something more? money's a little tight right now as i just put a camo xtreme under it a installed joey's clutch kit. any suggetions you have i would greatly appreciate. i tried looking at big johns website tonight but it doesn't appear to be working.

anyone have any idea what this is going to cost? maybe i don't want to know!! going to start calling around tommorw but thought you guys might have some tips for me.

thanks everyone.

donald

That's bad news to hear man.
If money was no object...go bigger and turn it into a big bore. Might have to keep it stock for now. Maybe you can find a set of take off jugs for cheap.

Good luck and sorry to hear about that.

coulda been worse. just got the part list and with a refurbished jug and a new piston and parts it only came to about $550. i'd like to do more but money just isn't going to allow it this year.

however when they put the motor's number in the system they found out that it's had a new crank and a new top end. so it had the ring update and still failed. do you think the pin left the piston and the ring moved or just a bad ring? hopefully this is the last of it!

Get a refurbished jug and a new set of SPI pistons and a 5 hole base gasket

A five hole? Seriously as if that engines not building enough compression as it is, I'm not sure if I'd go that direction. Stock is a 6 hole. Detonation has been known to take out rings not to mention the wear and tear on everything else.

Play it safe and stay 6 hole or enough go as high as 7 or 8. I've gone back and forth between the two and it seems to have better sustained power on a long pull if you increase the squish. You won't notice any loss in power and that engine will react to pump gas better. If you don't mind running a little race fuel then a 5 hole will do fine.

Just my 0.02. Play it safe.

I broke a ring in my 04 Summit 800. Lucky for me it happened during the 2 year warranty period. Dealer put in a new short block. Motor failure sucks....

I would go stock OEM parts, get the refurbished cylinder and the stock pistons and replace the base gasket with what was on it. The new pistons have been improved and should last. I lost a lower rod bearing last year and replaced the motor with a shortblock. Rotax builds quality motors and parts, you can't go wrong with them.

broken ring/piston

Skidoo used a different piston/ring manufacturer during 03-05! I broke a piston skirt on an 03 800 H.O. and the very same thing on an 05!! The 03 cost me big but the 05 was covered by warranty. In both cases 06 pistons were installed and no further problems to report!! Sorry man!! I feel for ya as I've been in your shoes. I sold the 03 and the 05 now has wiseco pistons with slp perf pkg on it. Lots of guys had this problem and we need to let everyone know this!!
