Broke Crank 2001 RMK

First off, I'm new to sledding and new to this forum. I just bought a 2001 800 RMK and I broke the crank after having the clutch serviced. Can anyone recommend where to go to have the bottom end rebuilt? I have read extensively about Indy Dan. Does anyone have experience with other shops good or bad?

Indy Dan is probably your best bet if you think its worth putting that much money into an old sled. I'm having a local shop rebuild and upgrade the crank and align bore the case in my 2000 rmk 800 and I had to replace the pistons so Its already cost me over $1500.

I called Indy Specialties today and spoke to Dan. I finally got my engine out and will send it to them next week. While I have all that room under the hood, I'm going to freshen up the steering and pull the steering stem to reinforce it.

Get the steering post from Wildchild, Kurt Holland.
His website is Canada Sled Parts. I ran his post on my chassis. It's ten years old now and still extremely solid.

I second the wild child post. I had him put a t top on mine back in the day. My son rides it now, still going strong.

For the steering post get the fabcraft its super beefy and works amazing there is now play or bending on mine and ive used it for the past 2 seasons

I would have to agree that Mike's work is GREAT. I never used his post, but if his trailing arms and handlebars are any indication, you can't go wrong with his steering post either. Mike is a great guy and can have parts out the door pretty quickly even if they aren't hanging on the wall ready to ship.

Thanks for the good advice. I want this sled to be as bullit-proof as possible because it is going to live a long life with us as a back-up/loaner sled. I'll give them a call while the motor is being rebuilt. Any suggestions for the top-end?

While Dan is doing your bottom end, I'd have the cylinders ported and run some SLP cheater heads (pick the domes that match your elevation for pump gas (go up one notch if you don't mind running race gas), SLP twin pipes on it. Straight bore the carbs out to 42mm.

ORRRRRRRRRRR, actually, in all honesty and sincerety, you might be money ahead to sell your broken engine for parts and buy a good recently rebuilt 2003-05ves engine that would bolt right in. It would have reverse. You could bolt that in and still be able to ride this season.

Let me know or PM me if you would consider that as an option. I have that exact engine that came out my 2001 chassis that past November, when I sold the chassis.

I am looking forward to having a well built engine. I am finishing the tear down this weekend. I think that indy specialties will breath another 3-4 years of life into the bottom end. Now, I will have to worry about everything else holding up. Will this engine work in other chassis? I'll be keeping an eye open for somthing newer if I can get a good deal on another chassis.
