Broke 5.9 Valve spring

Any one ever had a exhaust valve spring break on a Cummins? Lost the #4 exhaust valve spring on X-mas eve, fortunately the valve stayed in the head(didnt drop). going to put her back together tonight hopefully no other engine damage.

I've not, but out of curiosity, what year Cummins/how many miles/what did it sound like?

The first noise will be the metallic rattle of the lifter not opeaning and closing the valve, folowed by a heavy missfire. The cylinder with the broken spring in not functioning. Running on 5. I replaced the valve spring solved the problem as the valve stayed in the head and did not drop into the engine. Which would have been catarostropic. The truck is 98 24 valve motor with 240000 miles.

my dad did on his 24v at about 175k. I "just" replaced a head gasket on my 12v at 350k!!

That us pretty amazing the valve stayed up in the head. Because that is the only thing holding it in the head is the spring with keepers on top! Lucky guy!

Had 3 come through the shop. 03,04,06. 03 dropped the valve and busted the cylinder/head on #6. 04 and 06 the seats came loose and dropped the valves and ruined the motors also.
