Breakin in Freeride and Carry Chains...

Amazing ride yesterday with a great crew, some from NSMB and it was all sweet until we were about to leave, on the way up it was bone dry on the road to 3km. When we returned it was snowing, no big deal we all have 4x4's. However it was snowing since 1 pm and around zero so the road down was now solid ice under snow...one guy who left a bit earlier said he slide down the Squamish Mills FSR 80 feet in his truck narrowly missing going over the bank...we arrived down to find a guy almost over the edge. No chains between us except for one set...dumb!

Quick thinking we got friends to buy chains and meet at the bottom via sled and got 3 pairs. 2 did not fit so we spent the next 7 hours riveted driving down trucks sharing the 2 sets...it was an awesome crew who did not panic but helped until everyone was off the mountains...if you ski, sled, snowboard or 4x4 carry chains...beats losing a truck or worse a life...!

Good post, great pics. Chains are kind of a "lost art", it took me a long time to find some that fit my truck. I find myself using them alot more than I would have thought. I've seen a chained up 2 wheel drive truck go where a non chained 4 wheel drive wished it could go.

Get some, they're like a cheap insurance policy.

Great post! I have had my enclosed trailer break lose on me as well. Luckily I was able to recover but, I just ordered a set of cable chains for my trailer to prevent that from happening again. Now, if I can remember to put them on before it's too late.

I enjoyed both the sledding pics and bike video, I used to ride urban/trials back in the day. I always wanted to ride north shore, but I never got the chance while i was still biking.

To add the the post I'm always surprised how many people don't carry a plastic shovel, and a bag with mitts and toque + other important gear for the winter months. I think I might be adding chains to my bag of winter tricks, and maybe some other peoples as well!

thanks for the post.

I got an extra under the box (flatbed) toolbox just so I could carry my 4 chains with me 24/7. They've been used many times and fit perfect and make a HUGE difference. Needed all 4 to get into the cabin last week of hunting season, low range 3rd or 4th gear, diesel workin it, snow over the bumper...love it!!!

awesome pics, wish we had that kind of snow here, i bet there were quite a few puckered chili rings on the way down the mountain...lol
glad everybody made it out safely

yeah that looks fun for sure!

Chains kick butt, I carry a full set for my truck all winter. They're ridiculous, saved me (and those I've towed out/up) several times, and I've never had to be towed out thanks to them. Front axle first, if thats not enough I chain up the rear too.
