Brake controllers

I'm going to need a brake controller before my trailer gets here in a few weeks, what brand should I be looking at and what type? I'll be pulling an 18x8.5 Cargo Mate enclosed trailer that weighs about 2800lbs empty.

Whatever brand you decide on, choose a digital number display type. Much easier to set, say for instance you leave the house and its dry roads and then you get down the road and its icy. You would set your desired brake intensity on the dry roads, take note of that display number then you might want to dial it down for the ice, you might already know what number you would want here so it's easy to go right to it. No screwing around.

I also like the Tekonsha Prodigy. Reasonably priced and easy to use. It's hands down the most popular choice of trailer towers on the RV forum I frequent.

I'm liking that Tekonsha P3 and bought with the harness for my truck it will cost $159 shipped. Sounds like this is the one I will be getting. Appreciate the feedback guys.

yes the weight of the trailer will not matter on your brake controller. Just set your gains a little higher and it will do all the work. The prodigy is a nice controller because it proportionally works the brakes vs just slamming them on. The only difference in the controllers is how many trailer brakes it will operate...2...3...4 axel trailers.

Another vote for the Tekonsha Prodigy. I wish the P3 was that cheap when I bought mine, I probably would have spent the few extra dollars for the upgrade. The Prodigy has worked awesome with a number of trailers that I've pulled.

I have the prodigy as well... I use the boost feature for unloaded/loaded/loaded heavy load

I had a time based controller.. it sucked.. I'd say get some sort of porportional controller.

I run a Tekonsha Voyager, it works great. Time based is terrible, don't even consider it.

I have a controller now but don't care for it. If I buy a new controller is it plug-n-go or would I need to do some wiring?

It is on a 2002 GMC 2500HD which came with factory trailer tow package and I believe there was a wiring harness in the glove box, though I'm not sure if the camper place used that to wire up the controller they installed.

Does it have a factory 5 or 7 pin connector on your bumper? I believe if you have the factory tow package that it comes with the connector under the dash to hook to your controller, at least my Dodge does.

AK - the truck has the factory tow package. I don't think there is a pigtail connector to plug into. Looks to me like the wiring harness plugs into a panel on the firewall.

If GM had tried a little harder they could have made it even more difficult to expose/access where it plugs in.

Coldfinger, buy the Tekonsha Prodigy or P3 and get their GMC wire harness. Makes it very easy plug and play.

Or you can splice their included pig-tail harness to your pig-tail harness. I did not want to mess with it, making sure all the connections are solid, etc. It is easier to just get their harness for your truck.

Get the Tekonsha. I have the Voyager, works like a champ and cheap and idiot proof. You'll probably have to do some splicing on the controller but it's only three wires if I remember right and the color codes are mostly universal. Your hitch wiring should remain the same.
