Boondocking/riding areas near New Castle

Hello fellow Colorado sledders:face-icon-small-win

I am a fellow sledder from Norway, Europe. Here is the deal. My paretens are retiering and are looking into buying a condo in the New Castle Glenwood springs area. They have lived in Glenwood for a year about a decade ago. This gives me a perfect oportunity for sledding vacations to the US. I have had the plessure of skiing in Keystone - amazing times with epic pow.

In Norway I ride a custom boosted Yamaha apex 162". I do mostly boondocking in medows, open areas and in the trees. i have staid away from climbing after I got kids. Trying to stay alive with three kids - seen to many avalanches.

So here is my questions

1. Where is the best area for boondoocking in this area - looking for areas with lots of pow - Grand Mesa, Noth River National park etc.?

2. How are the laws in CO - do you have to stay on trails or can you boondock where ever you want in certian areas?

3. A good place to rent mountain machines in this area. Looking for 800 mountain macines or a Yamaha nytro mtx (boosted if possible:D)?

4. A good place to rent a trailer if we want to go to different areas?

5. What time of the year is the best for pow conditions. When does spring riding start

Thanks for any input guys and girls:face-icon-small-coo

Soory for the bad English.

Boost on - ride safe:D

Hi TTE and welcome to the USA.

Most of your questions can be answered: www.snowmobilecolo.com which is the official web site of the Colorado Snowmobile Association. Go to the map and click on the locations you're interested in. The snowmobile clubs produce trail maps and have rental sponsors that serve various locations.

See: Rifle Snowmobile Club, Flattopers Snowmobile Club

The West Elk trail head is very close to New Castle. It will take you to some of the very best powder riding in the state. There are no riding restrictions within the Flattops trail system(White River National Forest), however there are wilderness designations that are noted on the trail map and you are required to know where they are.

Glenwood Springs and Rifle have rental equipment.

Best time to ride and not destroy your sled: Mid December to mid May as the elevation on the Flattops and Grand Mesa is about 8,500 to 10,000'

You an also access the Grand Mesa from Carbondale, Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction.

Hope this helps,

BCB

Take the West Elk Creek road to the parking lot (takes 1/2 hour). Then ride to Triangle Park and drop into "Skateboard Alley". That's what some guys I talked to call it. Several hills that act like a skateboard half pipe. Ton's of terrain!

Try JM adventure rentals out of Rifle CO for sled rentals. lots of M6 Arctic cats that are in great condition. He even pipes some of them and has boss seats on some. Pretty crazy for some rentals. All in great shape including clothing rentals. Some of the best sledding in the state is up on Grand Mesa and Flattops, right near New Castle. You'll have a great time.
