Boondocker Mini Intercooler Ride Report

I've never been a big fan of the lag associated with intercoolers on turbo's, but know that any drop in boost temperature helps with power and minimum octane requirements. I had been speaking with Justin Barnes from Code Red Performance about Boondockers newest mini intercooler and decided to try one out. I installed it and had a chance to try it out this weekend. I'm running an M8 on 9lbs of boost and have about 1400 miles with boost on it, so I'm very familiar with the performance of the sled. The first test was to see if there was any additional lag, there wasn't. As a matter of fact it seems like the throttle respose is even better. The boost temperatures dropped a minimum of 80 degrees and the power was way more consistent when working the sled on long pulls again and again without letting it cool off.
A big thanks to Justin from Code Red Performance for getting me a great price on the intercooler and the technical support when I had questions.

I am looking at putting a BD kit from Code Red on my M8 as well ...

I was looking at the kit with the intercooler. Why does running an intercooler cause more lag with a turbo setup?

When you went with the kit, did you go with Code Red's clutching specs as well? I'm trying to get somewhat of an idea what I'm gonna lose in rideability and/or bottom end doing a BD pump gas turbo from Code Red ....

I'm running the same intercooler on my race gas BD M8 and have similar results. I haven't noticed any lag and charge temps have been much lower. I'm seeing about 150-160 degree charge temps at 12 lbs on straight av gas.

Dogmeat-
Justin's clutching works well. I've been trying a couple other setups and so far haven't been able to beat Justin's setup. While out riding our sleds side by side his clutch's stayed noticeably cooler than mine with cutler's clutching setup.

yamazoom looks good. I thought you needed the DC converter to run the fan. It looks like you have the stock regulator on there. Do you have some other type of converter or are you getting DC power from the stock system somewhere?

thanks,
Woody

There is no lag with this mini-intercooler, previous designs were much larger and had much more internal restrictions that created a pressure drop across the cooler that created lag. With Boondockers new intercooler core this does not happen.

In regards to your question about reliability, mine has had the reliability of a stocker. I have not had a single issue since I installed the turbo.
Go with Code Red's set up, Justin has his clutching and tuning figured out to make this a pull and go setup.

I can give you the wire colors if you need them, I run my wide band and intercooler fan off of the headlight curcuit.

thank you. I have the wiring diagrams. It seems there is DC power in several places on the 09-10 sleds you just have to know where to look.

thanks,
Woody
