Boondocker Fuel Controller with A/F input, auto tune?

Doing a RkTek 858 kit, and recived the Boondocker box. I see its possible to connect it to a A/F gauge, and get the A/F numbers on the box. Is this just to log the A/F ratio on the BD box, or is there some kinda way to preset desired A/F ratios and it adjusts itself?

you can use your afr readings to dial the sled to your likes based on these variables

elevation
compression ratio
rpm
fuel octane
fuel quality

it is a very handy tool. can save a set of pistons and much more accurate than by just going off of pugs. downside is that they tend to bounce all over the pace down low and sometimes in the mid range.

The boondocker box it self is kind of a tricky sob to figure out off the bat. My advice is to start with a preprogrammed map from someone running a similar set up as yours. only do one map change at a time. it makes adjustments off of fuel pressure at given rpms.

it looks something like this
fuel pres : low mid high

rpm 5100 - 6 12 24

for instance if you are cruising down the trail at .25 throttle and notice the afr is reading lean and your rpm is at 5300 ( lets say afr is giving you a reading of around 14), then you would go into that rpm in the bd box closest to the rpm you desire to add/decrease fueling. you would then make a small adjustment, in this case add +1, and then retry it.

It is different tuning a turbo however, i run mine pretty lean in the low and mid range to get her to spool faster, then i run it a bit fat in the upper rpm ranges in the mid and high. i know this, i don't let people use my sled, and when on the trail or putting around i blip the throttle as much as possible ( watch dennis anderson driving grave digger for a good how to)

the main thing is, to be successful tuning with the bd box, i would recommend spending an entire day riding in your faverite spot with hte only intention on getting it close to dialed as you can AFTER break in. You want to remove all variables as possible. Locate a good fuel sorce, and stick with it, use the same oil, if you are premixing oil then be exact. ETC ETC. The BD box is a handy tool and i personally wouldn't mess with it if i didn't have an AFR probe.

one more note is that the probes do go bad. I would recommend buying a good bosch replacement from napa and keeping it in the truck. If your sled is dialed it can burn out and you don't have to worry about it, but if your like me, being in the dark is scary.

Thanks for the write up on the bd box.

Maybe my question was missunderstood.
No issues tuning with the bd box, i have tuned several sleds with boondockers boxes before, but all have been turbo applications, and none had the a/f ratio input, so i have always used a standalone a/f gauge.

This is my first non turbo bd box, and i saw it had the a/f input option. So i wondered if it had any other use, than just log and display it.

Would be nice to have the option to preset a a/f number for each specific rpm and tps range, and the box wwould auto tune itself to get to the desired a/f ratio.

Just a display feature on my '13 box.

One thing to be aware of with a non-turbo boony box (unless they changed since mine, hard to get that info for some reason?) is they grab chassis voltage for TPS signal instead of ECM voltage (much more accurate).
If it plugs into the injector harness in line (instead on the ECM jump) you will have this "dirty" voltage. Especially since the '13's.
Just means you need to check your TPS no. at idle and WOT. Use these numbers to reset the RPM break-up points for your sled cause chances are they will be different than it was boxed with. Mine were very different on the first bunch of boxes.
In the papers you got in the box this is about the only good info provided.

Thanks for that notice. Looks like i have the same as you, so will check the TPS numbers.
