WENDOVER, Utah — A 47-year-old record-setting motorcycle racer has died after losing control and crashing while traveling at 239 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

Investigators were not sure what caused Cliff Gullett, of Bozeman, Mont., to lose control of the motorcycle Wednesday during a time trial.

The American Motorcyclist Association said on its Web site that Gullett was competing in the 500cc Streamliner class at the Salt Flats, where drivers go for speed records every summer on the open space just east of the Nevada state line.

Gullett owned Team Bozeman Motorsports, a motorcycle and snowmobile dealership. He had set a handful of world land-speed records and wanted to eventually become the first to reach 400 mph on a two-wheeled Streamliner, according to an interview last week with The Billings Gazette.

Curt Lance, Team Bozeman's general manager, said "Cliff always told me that if anything happened on the Salt, he wanted it to be quick and not lingering. He died doing the thing he loved to do most — racing at Bonneville."

Odd as it sounds.... I am watching 'The World's Fastest Indian' on DVD at my shop right now

I would rather die of speed than cancer. My wife just beat round 2 of cancer

Godspeed

Them are the old bikes I cut my teeth on for repairing. I was born in 63, my mother said my dad had me in the shop while he was working on bikes. I was still in diapers, I guess watching without a peep. She says that's why I am a natural at repairing them. Have some old bikes in the shop right now, among the newer ones, a 56 Cushmann Eagle 64 Honda Dream and a 68 Honda CL160Scrambler. Scheduled for this winter is some engine rebuild work for restore projects on Indian, Norton, Harley etc... Still have the old books. A few of these bikes are from your era of riding. Myself, wear knee braces from dirt bike days of the 70's. Need replacements but have been stalling because of my age and the fact I still ride. Broke 10,000 miles for the summer this past weekend on a ride with one of my best girlfriends. Time to tear down the ole Harley and rebuild over the winter.
Take care my friend and ride on....
