Bolts in recoil backing off.

Someone please help. I've had trouble keeping the bolts that attach to my crank and hold my starter pully and balancing wheel on keep backing off and tearing up my recoil. I've tried everything to keep them on. Torque them to spec, and they still back off. Torque them to tight as I can get em. and nothing works. Blue, red locktight, nothing works. If anyone's had this problem, or knows what it could be, please help. Thanks

Same Problem

I Have Gone Through 4 Recoils This Year. 2 Of Them On The First Pull. Cant Really Put Them In Wrong. The Other 2 The Bolts Came Loose And Drinded Everything Up. Luck It Never Took Out My Stater Or Flywheel. Put Locktight On Them And Torqued Them Down. Best Thing Is To Make A Check List Of What You Have To Do Before You Go Out Everyweekend And Put It On Your List. I Know It Sucks If You Just Wanna Pull The Rope And Ride, But They Are Snowmobiles. Best Of Luck. Steve

Be very carefull in balling down on those screws (bolts?). The threads are not that good in that flange and will strip very easilly.

Try cleaning up the threads with a tap, clean with brake clean and installing new bolts with a drop of red loctite. I've never seen that not work.

Does installing a bolt/washer/nut in the post where the clip is (as discussed in the 'REV recoil problems' thread) help to prevent these bolts from backing off? Or is that done to solve another problem?

the aluminum on the flange is soft. combine that with the self-tapping bolts and you can have problems. for some reason our demo rev starting doing this. we took off the flange and put steel thread inserts in with red loctite. used different bolts to attach the recoil with blue loctite. no problems yet.

I think before I went to all that - that I would try a 1/4-20 form tap and move up to the 1/4" bolts. (Assuming that it is currently 6mm eh?) No drilling would be needed.

Blue is all you should need....red on small bolts will take the threads with the bolt when it backs out. I would check the threads out very close....

My 01 summit 700 and 03 summit 800 both did this. I got so tired of dealing with it, so I just drilled out the threaded flange and put bolts through them. never had a problem again.

My problem is not that the recoil is separating from the flange, its that the 3 bolts that hold my starter pully and attach to my magneto are backing off. And by doing so they tear up my whole recoil assembly. Just want to know the best way to keep those bolts from backing off. Or maybe I have bigger problems, as in my crank bearing or something along those lines. Thanks for all the help guys.

You know - I think I did realize that you were asking aboot the big nut at the begining of this thread. LOL! :o

Still - I use Loctite usually - but that nut always seem to have quite a bit of drag in and of its own. ???

Nitro - You were able to fit nuts on the back side then? Assuming SS Nylocks?

I would run a tap through to clean the threads, then brake cleaner to degrease them.(bolts too) Make sure it's dry, then use blue locktite. That should take care of it permanantly.
