Bodie State Park

I have been up there a few times. Right now there is good snow down to Highway 395. I believe the road should be covered all the way to the Town. The mountains headed to Bodie are snow covered, but I dont know the depth. There could be a lot of rocks just under the snow if you were thinking to ride off trail. I hope this answers your questions. Ride safe.

Are you a Forest Service Cop? I take it they dont plow hwy 270 at all? I would assume there is a resident state Park Ranger there year round?

Many years ago I rode out to Bodie in the winter on snowmobiles.
We rode on the road, which had a couple feet of snow on it.

And yes, there is a ranger there year round to keep an eye on the place.

you couldnt pay me enough to live up there in winter... creepy, isolated... would make for a great stephen king novel... hahaha

What on earth did you do to get kicked out of there? They have always been really nice to me when I have been in there? They just having a bad day?

You are not allowed in Bodie Stat Park on your sled. You can park it and walk through but the sled has to stay outside of the boundary. As soon as the Ranger hears a sled he fires up his and out searching. It's a $500 fine if you get caught.

A few years back I went sled skiing out there but never made it to Bodie.

Yep, I am a Forest Service Cop. I am at the Bridgeport Ranger District. Nope they only plow maybe a hundred yards in. The Folks that live up at Bodie Snowmobile in and out. I did some checkin and its true you cant take your sled into Bodie, but you can go through on the main road which would continue on past bodie. There is no off roading in the area. No fences either to show you when your in or out, but the folks up there might show you if you ask. More snow tonight. A few friends love to take a night ride into Bodie when there is a full Moon. Ride safe.

Not that I disagree with what you said but I was told you can't ride thru or near the town/streets but you can do some climbing on the hills on the way into and out of the area?????????? SO which is it???? Thanks

To FS Cop; Are you allowed to ride North of Bridgeport on Little Walker River Rd? What about Green Creek Road. I was told you could as long as you arent in the wildnerness, but not sure if I got bad information?

Ok here is the scoop on Bodie: I talked to Jim Pence (whom I know) he is the Bodie Law Enforcement State Park Ranger. Riding on the hills (before the cattle guards) going into Bodie is permitted.(off road riding on the road from 395 is permitted until the cattle guards) The Cattle Guards on all routes into Bodie are the boundaries , anything inside of the cattle guards is off limits except the road in and out. The ridge line surrounding Bodie proper is off limits due to some historical sites and worst of all OPEN MINE SHAFTS  The hours for riding are 10AM to 3pm this pertains to inside the cattle guards.. or the Bowl of Bodie. You will be cited if found in this area before or after hours,no exceptions!!!, the areas before the cattle guards have no time restristictions (these areas are F/S & BLM) You can ride into Bodie , park your sleds in the vehicle parking areas (pay the fees) and walk thru, X country ski and snowshoe thru the town proper (non motorized travel only) if their are anymore questions you can contact Jim Pence (jpenc@parks.ca.gov) or by telephone @ 760-647-6445 which is the line to Bodie itself!!! Hope this helps clear things up a little...

Green Creek road is legal riding up to the Hoover Wilderness Boundary, you can ride over to Summers Meadows or out of the Green Creek Area over to Virginia lakes area, but because of the recent Wilderness Bill, the Tamarak lake area is now Wilderness. The Wilderness Manager is still working out the boundary issue. You can ride over into The Ricky Peak area that area is all open when there is enough snow. As for Little Walker River road, I would need to check a map with you to see where you want to go, because there is a Wilderness up there as well. I hope this has been a helpful.

As far as little walker river road I was wondering about riding up to obsidian campground which is just a few miles in off the hwy. Im sure riding up to the Emma Lake trailhead would be wildnerness???
