Blown up Clutch after 2 rides...

So Comet clutches has gone out of business. This is really inconvientent for me as I just istalled a Comet 4 tower clutch which cost me around 650 bucks and it blew up after 2 rides with a total of less than 200 miles.

The reason I got the comet clutch in the first place was because I went to my dealer last year after having problems with my stock TRA (which had been rebuilt twice). My dealer told me to quite rebuilding the stock TRA clutches and buy a comet 4 tower. So I drop the coin and buy the clutch through Western Power Sports. After getting the comet clutch put on this year it grenades (spider was pulled out of the threads due to no locktite from the factory from what i'm told) after 2 rides?! wtf is with that?

So I go to my dealer and tell them whats happened and they say that 3 other guys have been in that week with the same issue with comet clutches that they got late last season/early this season. And they are replacing them with 800 polaris RMK clutches and that this is the clutch to have. So after spending 650 bucks on a clutch that I got 2 rides on i'm suppose to go out and buy a polaris primary?! just seems like such BS and I'm obviously pi$$ed. No way of getting Comet parts at all that I know of . Sorry just a bit of a rant.

Even though Comet has gone out of business, I would suspect there are still parts available. Haven't had much to do with Comet myself but maybe the distributor will have an inventory of spare parts. Seems like an awful waste of money to have to buy something else with the clutch being so new :(

Ya man your tellin me. The clutch looks brand new and it might as well get thrown in the trash. As far as I know from the research I've done and word on the street is that you can't get any comet parts. The only other thing I can think of is have a machine shop or somebody with a water jet cut me a new 4 tower spider, or see if a Cat spider fits or could be machined to fit.

hmm.. buddies newer comet on his at 900 lost the spider last weekend as well, not a lot of miles on it either. seems as though the spiders arent holding very well.

good luck figuring things out, that sucks really bad!

Buddy of mine also had a bad one with a comet. Needed to pull it off to change the spacer so he could run the right belts, well it wouldn't come off for NOTHING. Clutch puller with a 3/4 inch impact and heating with a cutting torch didn't help, tried freezing it off with water in -30 weather, wouldn't come. Ended up cutting the whole thing off. It had to come off either way. Bad thing is we threw off his crank run out trying to get it off. So new crank as well. Can't figure out why it wouldn't come off. Pretty pathetic.

Ya they are a real b**ch to get off, take the clutch off the crank, put it in a vice and get 2 guys with a square spud bar then pry on it till your both about to drop nuts and it should come right off. Well now I have an 800 dragon primary clutch on my ski-doo. I swear i have the biggest frankenstien build in a rev chassis, second to Nick aka ski-dooin'it. So looks like i'm ready to get back on the snow after 1600 dollars in clutch work in the last 7 months...fml

That too bad that comet folded in, you might have got something from them.
Many years ago they paid for all the damages their primary did to my sled when it exploded from the bad casting. New primary, secondary, panel hood, and many more parts that got damaged. Just thought too let you know, maybe something still can be done.
