Blow off valve...is it needed or worth buying?

I bought my Silber turbo kit used and got all the parts the guy had. Its on a 09 D8. Works great but after looking at the silber website a lil more indepth i noticed they come with a blow off valve now along with some other things that my kit doesnt have. Are these things worth spending the money on them? The blow off valve is only like $80. Is it worth buying? if so what is the benefits to it or will it wreck something not having it?

My thoughts. Low boost = no High boost= yes!

With a Garrett ball bearing turbo below 16 pds no. I don't think Silber is using a Garrett??? and I don't think the turbo they use is ball bearing either??? so probably if it's one of the cheaper breakoff turbo's.

Yes. A blow off valve is next to the waste gate in importance when turbocharging an air-throttled engine. Without it, you will smoke thrust bearings, turbo shafts, compressor wheels. That "whop whop whop" or rattlesnake sound you hear when chopping the throttle at full boost is a bad thing, not a cool sound.

mike, contact Garrett.. You cannot damage the ball bearings ..
There is NO thrust load to deal with on a ball bearing turbo..

so,, if you have an antique plain bearing turb then YES get a bov to help the turbo live.
If you have a ball bearing turbo the choice is yours but you do not have to have one and you do NO damage without one..

the race stuff is over 30 psi without a bov and we have no run on when we chop the throttle...and no bearing damage either..

I have a silber kit that has a garrett turbo i dont know the model number right off hand. but the way it sounds it can go both ways so i think to just be safe I will most likely put one in.
