Black oil in Belly Pan - brand new PRO

I am not sure, but I think I read someone else post that there was black oil splatterings in their belly pan...

My sled is unridden, but I have given it two warm-ups in the driveway...and I have noticed black oil spots...

I checked the VES caps and ran my fingers under the exhaust manifold...wasnt getting anything from there...but that is approximately where the drips are located below.

Problem is, I just dont have the time to work out how to get that hood off, remove the pipe and start digging, and my dealer is miles away...just wondering if anyone else has noticed this on their sled and if they know the cause...

try a search this topic has been hit alrdy once. its from the extra oil used in the building of the motors. the doughnut on the y pipe hasnt seated all the way yet give it time after the frist ride it will seat and stop leaking.

More likely it's the bleed off from the exhaust valves. When the solenoid is open a small amount of oil will bleed off-check the EV solenoid and follow the drain line. There is a line from each EV to the solenoid and then one drain line from the solenoid. That's likely where your oil is comming from....not a big deal but the fix-I put a catch bottle on my IQ last year. Forgot about it on the Pro so will take a peek in the AM to see if there's room for a bottle.

Thanks Ron, but Aklogan had it bang on...was out checking it out and found it was coming from the y-pipe connection...

I did search the issue but didnt find the thread...knew I had seen the question previously...

Thanks again

I don't intend to hijack but the OP found his answer. Ron, I remember a couple of years ago you when you put the catch bottle on but we never heard how it worked out for you? Did you have to pour it out occasionally? Did it pour out into the belly pan when you tipped or rolled your sled over or did you put a cap on on to hold the oil? Do you have any pictures of the bottle installed? Thanks!

I had the same problem and what i did was take the hood off and undo the bumper and i took the pipe off and the seal was not on correctly so i cleand the pipe and the seal put it of correct and everything is working just fine now. the seal was offset a bit

Oil Mess - Catch bottle for VES line

I used a pill bottle & lid for a catch bottle with an undersized hole drilled in the lid for the hose (press fit) and then a small vent hole. A couple cotton balls inside to soak up the liquid. In a 1100 miles its accumulated enough oil to soak them. Considering all the other stuff that accumulates in the belly pan it probably wouldn't of been a big factor.

Mine is leaking bad to. It only ran to load on trailer. Its coming from the Y pipe donut. There must be alot of oil in the motor when built. It should seal more after 1st when it gets that oil out and gets hot. I dont think its coming from valves sense it hasnt been ridin yet.

No cap just tilted up a little. It might drain out if you were upside down for a while but it's pretty thick goo and doesn't flow when it's cooled down. The drain tube needs to be free (unrestricted) so that the EV's can open and close properly. The quantity isn't all that much, I think about 500 miles and then 2-3 ozs. But splattered in the belly pan it looks like a quart after a few rides.
They ooze the worst going down hill off throttle & maybe on a trail ride when you are going slow. (Like -20 in the morning and no lubrication in the snow.) Running hard in deep powder and hill climbing there seems to be very little. I bought a clear plastic bottle so I could see the level of oil. Here's a pic on my IQ>

Just run the exhaust valve dump line through the belly pan and vent the exhaust valve oil OUTSIDE of the sled.

X2. That's what I did on our '08 RMK and has worked good for over a year now. If there's a down side to this I'd be interested in hearing some thoughts. ??

Dont let the EPA hear that they would shut all snowmobiles down and start making manufactures make snowmobile engines like the new diesel engines where the air coming out has to be cleaner than going in! I think that your secret is safe with us tho. :tape2:
