Big SUV ?

If it's a diesel at 44k (I'm assuming miles) she's not even broke in yet and has 56k left on the engine warranty. If it's a diesel you'll be lucky if you feel your trailer back there compared to your durango.

And excursions hold up well! ONce you drive a diesel and then you drive a v-10 or v-8 you'll curse every hill driving a gas powered one.

I would stay away from it with only a 5.4. Excusions are based on, as I'm sure you already know, the super duty platform and they are built pretty stout and are heavy. With only a 5.4 it would be soft on power and not so well on gas. But being a much bigger heavier rig than you currently have I am sure it would handle your trailer alot better than your durango even with the 5.4.

I'm sorry, didn't even look at your link. Not a deisel though I see. I wouldn't even consider it. The weight of the truck with the 5.4 and then throw a trailer on it. eesh! Think the fuel milage woudl be enough to drive a guy broke in no time with the gas. Go Diesel, you won't regret it!

A larger engine would be better, but...

Tell them you want to take it for a few days, drive around with it normal (unloaded) for a while, and then hook the trailer up and go for a drive to see what you think of the power on the hills.

I've test driven a couple with the V-10s and was impressed, but not a 5.4, so I can't really comment there.

My brother-in-law out in Montessano has an Excursion that I think he is looking to sell. I don't know how much or what engine, but I can check if you want. Drop me a PM if you would like me to check.

The company I used to work for bought us a one ton ford with the 5.4 for "pulling equipment", it could not even pull itself much less with a load on it. Never could shift itself into OD empty, it was sad...doesnt sound like you are wanting a diesel, which is my choice if was to get one for pulling, and i have never driven one with the V-10. I think you would be happier with the V-10 or a diesel. My .02

90% of my pulling/riding is just 30 mi. from home. I drove it last night and it's not fast... but it's not a toad. I just need to be sure it has 4.10 rear end.
RV.NET Really has a ton of good info on this stuff.

v10 27ft enclosed 6 sleds going from m.n to cook city montana we got a high of 11 mpg on the thingy,so realy only 9mpg.same trailer with a stock 7.3 at 70mph 13 with a head wind on the way out,15 on the way back.you do the math.btw with the 7.3 you could pull a hill at 70 and not drop a inch of speed, the v10 would lose 10 or more and took forever to get it back, you can also pass good with the 7.3,on a hill,in od,on cruise.just my .02 cent's but you'r $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$:)

Do not touch it unless its a Stroker. I have a V10 for a work truck and it is gutless. Spark plugs are for passenger trucks.

Looked at a few excurions in Denver with Stoker and 50K or less priced around $28,000. Take your time and buy the right truck.

I wouldn't worry too much about not getting a diesel. For what you are looking for the excursion looks to be pretty good and the price is good too. It will handle you trailers with ease and as said before, it is basically a SD chassis.

So what if you can't do 75+ going up the hill to the pass?

Buy that thing and laugh at all the people who think you need a diesel to drive anywhere.

Get a real truck!!!

Dont waste your time with a little kiddie truck!!

Thant thing will do everything you want it to do plus more. Us diesel owners just have a tough time going back to gas..

Enjoy.

I had a v10 excursion. Mileage sucked, but you already knew that.

Prepare to turn/replae rotors every 18 months. Ford underdesigned the brakes for how heavy they are.

Having said that, I was in a major acident with this vehicle (Lady pulled out from a side street in front of me, I hit her at 55 mph in the drivers door), the lady did not fare so well, but me and my family walked away with almost no injuries.

Good truck even with a v10. YOu can pick one up with 75k miles on it for $10k or less.

It rides every bit of a 3/4 ton (Cause that is what it is), but it pulls trailers straight and does not get pushed around.

Go for the v10, yep a bit more gutless than the 7.3 but then again, you probably dont use it that much for towing anyway, and who cares if you lose speed up the hill.

SInce you're not up for one with a 'stroke in it, definately go for the V10. In a rig that size, the V10 does not get any worse mileage than the 5.4, maybe a little better even.
I've had a 6.8V10 F250 4x4, and it got avg 12mpg (not towing), had a couple 5.4's in 2wd F250's that got about the same mileage. COme to think of it, the 5.4 in my 2wd F150 does not do any better, maybe 13mpg, that's all.
I'm sure you could do a little better by driving w/ an egg under your shoe, but comparitively, the FOrd gassers are all about the same.
The 6.8L V10 does have significantly more power though than the 5.4.

If you want a hot rod gasser that'll pull good, get a Suburban w/ the 8.1L.

Guess I'll find out... got 'em down a couple thou...
She's mine now!

i'll miss that little Hemi!

Sorry missed your post earlier.

I had a V10 Excursion and really liked it. Pulled a 27' travel trailer from Colorado to California a couple of times. It worked great. Not great mileage and did eat brake rotors but I'll bet they have that pretty well worked out now. I had it for over 90,000 miles.

Enjoy your beast. They sure are nice for friends and family comfort.
