any good web cams along I 80 in Nebraska and weather sites to check current weather for the big red state? Leaving saturday for Snowies, sounds like it's going to be real nasty, 70 mph wind gusts, Thanks

hey where are you staying? I'm hoping to leave saturday for albany from NW iowa...we will be coming down to Omaha and off on i80....it could be pretty narrrly getting out there!

i am up super early (for the time zone) and typing this from scottsbluff nebraska, right on the wyoming border. lynne and i saw a small window in the BIG storm and decided to go for it down the i 80 corridor (south route), we made it to grand island nebraska before we finally hit ice that you couldnt drive on. we stayed the night there.

we got up late on xmas eve and tried to head further west. less than 10 miles west of grand island nebraska with tractors and cars in the ditch on both sides our trailer completely turned sideway on the road due to heavy ice and strong winds. i used every ounce of luck i ever saved up, with that and the great traction control on the truck, and trailer brakes i somehow saved it.

we went to the next exit and stopped, cleared my head, and cleaned my shorts. we asked for any alterntive routes west and they all were iced. we opted to continue down i80 very cautiously. most of this time i had to have the truck or trailer tires on the rumblestrips or a small dry patch on the shoulder. we made it to kearney, stopped and ate lunch, watched the weather, and talked to locals about our quandry. they told us the further west we go, the better it gets so, we kept on going, and it got lots better.

by the time we got to north platte the roads were dry. we drove all the way to kimball (just past sidney where the REAL cabelas is (LOL), then headed to scottsbluff. from northplatte to kimball and onto scottsbluff the elevation changes drasticly as well as the terrain. we are basicly in the foothills of the rockies now. hoping the weather and roads hold up so we can make it into casper and onto dubois today.

with any luck (unless we used ours all up) tomorrow we will be riding, then staying in jackson wyoming. then sunday we will ride, and stay at elevation @ togwotee pass between dubois and moran wyoming at togwotee mountain lodge. they have a web cam for snow conditions if you were interested, you might even see our truck and trailer or sleds from the cam, as it faces the parking lot. that is where we will be till next saturday or sunday. then we head home. it's just lynne and i so, it is a nice break away from everything and a good christmas gift for both of us. well, sorry for the book, just wanted to give an update.

roads could get worse with snowfall on top, I80 from omaha to north platte is the worst, don't try it at night! just be carefull or delay your plans till the roads get better. last we checked on www.wyoroad.info and www.511nebraska.org
they had small trailer ban on 80 through the pass between cheyenne and laramie.

merry christmas to you all! ski

Skidooboy... good to hear you didnt end up in the ditch with them! hope the rest of your travels go well! I'm headed that way myself next thursday, maybe the ice will be gone by then. lol Have a good time. Eric

Thanks for the website, looks like Omaha is a nightmare right now, may have to wait a day. We're staying at the Old Corral

Check out the 511 for Nebraska. Almost all of the roads in the eastern 1/4 of the states are closed. I also see the gates are donwn on 1-80 in Laramie. I would say you might be able to drive out on Sunday. Eric

thanks for the well wishes rulesy! we made it through to jackson. we drove 26 from scottsbluff to i25 then north to casper, then east on 26 and 287 over togwotee pass. had some slick spots, nothing major. saw lots of wildlife, buffalo, muley's, a huge whitetail buck, bunch of eagles, pronghorn lopes, and the sun poked it's head out for a spectacular sunset over the brecca cliffs and off to our south (wind river range i believe). the wind died down considerably once we got to casper.

you guys be carefull dont leave early, postpone your trips out and back. not worth the gamble to lose you rig, gear, or life. and this early in the season, it might just end your riding season. by the time you get everything settled with the insurance companies (you do have insurance dont you? LOL!), and get stuff repaired or replaced.

not worth it in my opinion. there will be ALOT of other days to travel to ride. be safe out there, ski
