Not a premium member :face-icon-small-sad ...anyways, I'm looking to head to the Bighorns in 2 weeks.. wondering how the snow is and if its worth a 9 hour drive? Snotels are showing about 20-30 inches which doesnt seem like much. Is it to early to ride in the trees? I've only been to the bighorns in march and by that time of the years the trees seem to be ok. Is it really thin this time of year? Just dont want to be bouncing off hidden stumps and rocks constantly. Any infos appreciated. Thanks

sounds like there's some decent snow and quite a few people riding south of Bear Lodge. not much base so you have to be careful. If you watch Bears' website they give good updates when they get snow. I want to go the weekend of the 16th but cant find anyone to go with.:face-icon-small-fro

Was up today and the base is getting better, there is some good areas that you can find, just have to be careful and watch for those landmines :face-icon-small-win

Are you planning a weekend or longer trip the 16th?
wanted to leave thurs. night (15th) and drive home mon. morn. (19th). Have two days of vac. left. cant use them the last two weeks of dec. Could maybe get one more day.

Ride the horns alot have not been out this year yet waiting for more snow if you can go later normally better rideing. The horns have very sharp rocks that are not very forgiving. The trick with horns is to find places where the snow blows in. Certain places can have no snow and some with five feet this time of year. HAPPY TRAILS:plane:

Been up at bear for last two days we rode this morning and up high they got any were from 12-16 inches fresh! The big horns are ridiculous right now for snow ill post some pics tonite...

I'm premium now :face-icon-small-hap
Looking forward to the pics! Which way out of Bearlodge is the best riding?

Either go south or go way north to high country.. both lng rides from bear but great snow either side

Any of the lodges will work, just sucks cause the ride in to where the snow is at seems like it takes for ever... but once there its a sledders paradise

those are some good looking pics. Snopro. Thanks! Are you south of Bear in those?

I'm getting together a group of guys in Bismarck ND and were planning on make our first trip of the year on the 15th - 18th. Were looking at headin to the big horns or driving and the extra to cooke city. Anybody have any advice? Never riddin in the big horns before. I assume we would go to Dayton if we went to the big horns? Has anybody riddin both cooke and big horns this year? which would you go to for some early season rock hitting riding. :face-icon-small-hap

High Country is open year round. We stopped in many times during hunting season to watch the football games and get some hot food.

Was up saturday and rode most the day till a sled broke down... Found some good snow for sure. Had to leave the sled because it was almost dark and went back up today to find more snow, but the wind was horrible! Didnt get much riding done today, spent the whole day trying to get the sled out with just my sled and that didnt work so while we were heading out we ran into two guys who helped us out and not sure if they are on here or not, but thanks again Dan and Brady you guys saved us a trip up again tomorrow.

But the snow now has some base to it and it is getting to be really fun to ride because you can go most everywhere, but the bottoms of draws and windloaded hills seems to be the best still.

Pics are from saturday, not very good but shows some good spots. Didnt take any today on account of dragging a sled around all day.

4 of us from ND were up there on the dec1 thru dec4 they did have a lot of fresh powder which made the trip worth it its still pretty bare but we did find 2ft of powder in the trees..seemed like all the north facing slopes and bottoms had most of the snow..we went south down by the ski lodge.the ski lodge area is pretty bare so we headed north to the first parking area and rode from there the trees are awesome for this early in the year..we trailerd our sleds down to the parking area cuz the trail isn't groomed down that way yet and we didn't feel like hitting rocks or stumps on out way down there...its worth the trip some guys in elk view lodge said this is the most snow they've had in nine years for this time of year..
