I just bought a thing can for my 08 xp. Now I'm looking at getting an RKT 860 big bore. I was wondering if I could keep the can. I'm pretty sure Kelsey runs all his big bores with stock exhaust, has anyone kept an aftermarket can?

There's plenty of other bigbores to choose from.
The Sled Shed makes an 880 you know?
You also have Sled Head Racing, Terra Alps, Straightline and a few others I'm sure.

the flow capacity of my cans wont harm the big bore capabilities at all.
we have run them on my 860's since we built them.we oporate in a range from 1500ft to 8000 here .

exactly, there you have it from the man who makes the can, and things cans are well designed versus some of the cheap ones, so they will work better. for the weight drop, get one, try it and if you dont like it, sell it.

All of these would be good choices in my book.

i have a rkt 860 in the works. i know they tested quite a few different cans on rkt 860 last year. the only cans rkt said was as good as stock was the ultraQ and superQ. i dont remember if the turboal can was tested or not. wi
it work, yes. could it lose a couple hp, yes. whoever you decide to go with on your 860 do exactly what they recommend.

Hopefully all can realize that I can not test every can out there with my engine kits..But,I have tested almost all makers over the last 10 years.

I have written a tech article, located on my website, which should shed some light on what Silencers can and can not do and how they effect your engine.

This article is located http://www.2strokeheads.com/techcans.htm HERE.

Having said all that.. I am always willing to test any can that is sent to me with these kits. So, if any can makers would like to have their can tested with this kit and others, I can surely do that..
As of now, the only TESTED can that is working is the Skinz can, But I have not tested them all on the 860..

good read sir!! really gives people some real info to chew on, and understanding why certain mods work and others dont, not just they do or dont.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Kelsey, that article you posted was very helpful. After reading it I have a couple questions. Everybody always talks about ceramic coating their pipes and cans to keep more heat in them. But wouldn't that put more heat back into the engine making it run less efficiently? I was planning on ceramic coating my factory XP exhaust, and also ceramic coating my Thing can (it is black). This would be with my new big bore kit. Would you recommend not doing that? Turboal says his thing can will not restrict the 860 big bore so I will keep it on. Honestly even if I lost 2 hp or so I'd keep it on because I love the BRAP! Sorry people! Thanks again.

Denver,

Ceramic coating has little effect on keeping heat in the pipe.. You can prove this to yourself by trying to touch the pipe after a run.. I fyou can touch it, then you have a solid heat barrier, if you can not touch it, then there is a , not so effective, barrier..

As for putting heat back in the engine via "too hot of pipe" This is nearly impossible... EVERY pipe is made to operate in a very hot state. Getting the "pipe" too hot is not an issue. Getting the dirty, spent gases out of the exhaust IS the real issue. Think of pumping up a basketball with a hand pump.. Once the ballis near full, it takes much more pressure on the pump to complete the pumping stroke. This resembles what happens with the pipe.. I fyou can not rid the engine of the spent gases, the heat and pressure in the pipe begine to upset the flow and upset the function of the pipe.. The end result is an less effective exhaust system and too much "bad stuff" getting returned to the cylinder.. This is where the problems occur..

The silencer is NOT and should not be the controller of back-pressure. The stinger section has this job. What happens is that a mis-matched silencer will upset the stinger's ability to do its job. Again, you do not control back pressure with the silencer. The silencer is a bleed valve.. Active silencers actually couple the pipe pulses but they are not acting as a back-pressure device and should not be.
