live in n'west iowa about 45 min from I-90 and rand mcnally tells me to go way north up thru livingston and loop back around, I have never been there and we leave tuesday. What have you guys found to work best? and how long did it take you to get there?

if you want to drive into cooke you have to go through livingston. it is the only way into cooke in the winter. if you want to sled in you can go through cody and in the back way and park in the parking lot about 8 miles west of town and ride your sleds into town.

Been there twice this season from iowa, been going for 9 years. the drive sucks but the snow is worth it.

It would probably be shorter for you to go to Cody, And then over Dead Indian, and sunlight basin. But you can't drive all the way to Cook, you have to ride about 6 or 7 miles I think is what it was. Otherwise you would have to go to Bozeman And up the Gallatin Canyon.

I think what StoryBoy meant was You'd have to go to Livingston and down the Paradise valley into YP at Gardner and then to Cooke. Bozeman and Gallatin Canyon would take you to West Yellowstone.

I actually like the drive up the canyon from livingston and through the park. It is long and winding but the views and wild life is great. Last time I was in cooke, I had a HUGE bull elk feeding on a tree 6 ft from the truck, it was pretty neat.

Dragon, don't listen to me I'll get you lost. I got West Yellowstone and Cooke City Mixed up. We took sleds to Gardiner and into the park through that way but now that I think about it we unloaded at Mamoth witch is where the junction is to Cook City. Sorry about that. If you whan't to go over Dead Indian and that way, it would probably be easiest to stay on I90 until Laurel. And then go to Bridger and Belfry. That way you would'nt have to go over the Bighorns

I have timed the trip both ways sledding in from East of Cooke and going around through Livingston and it takes the same amount of time, but we are coming from the North at Laurel to get to the pilot creek parking lot.

If the weather is good you can go around in the same time, but you'll have extra miles on the tow vehicle. We go around now so we have rigs in town and don't have to sled out in the AM. Enjoy!

It is a horse a piece, all depends on if you want the sled and trailer in town. Also remember if you drive in you will have to pay to get through the park.

We usually drive all night and get there to ride. Go to the parking lot, the people might snow up in town at the same time but the people that came from the parking lot are ready to go riding and the people that drove in have to unload and suit up yet. Like I said 6 of one, half dozen of another.

If you park west of Cooke YOU will need to buy WY sticker's for your sleds, then when you get to town pay again for Montana. They check all the time at the parking lot at least when I have been there. Going through the Yellowstone park you pay per tow vehicle and its good for maybe 10 days.

Good Luck

True that you are suppose to. I already have one because we ride top of the world and big horns also. I also have never been stopped, I went there 4 times last year and twice so far this year. I guess luck only runs out when I am running illegal.

Buy the registration. There are two full time L.E.O.'s that share the time between Top of the World and the Pilot parking lot. Cheaper to pay for a registration than pay a fine and still need to buy a registration.
