Best tool to cut down a track?

A carpet knife... they have super sharp, thin, harned steel blades...

Spray the paddle where you are going to cut (wet) with silicone and cut the paddles with the carpet knife while it is still wet with silicone... super easy and fast.

Be carefull, you can cut yourself to the bone with these knives, very easily.

I heard another guy say that the "anvil cut" knives work well and in theory would make a very nice cut, but I am sure that it would triple the time it takes to do it with a sharp razor knife.

You will want to make a jig, template, or ? so that the cuts are straight.

I used steel sheers (scissors), they worked great, just wear gloves or you'll get major blisters like I did, haha. It didnt come out perfect, but in the end it is a track, and the lugs aren't hitting the tunnel up front so it definitely did the job. Good luck!

I used a razor knife with a hook blade. No problem. Didn't need any WD40 it just pulled right through. What I did though is put a little cut on the opposite end before so it wouldn't tear. Just eyeballed it and it was done in a hour.

Worm drive skilsaw, all my lugs came out even, got done in no time.

If I was going to cut down the lugs on a track I would use a template to score them all with a utility knife, and then go back with 'end snips' to cut them off. That would be very quick and very easy and would produce nice clean straight cuts.

Carpet knife blades are razor sharp but they're thin/flimsy and bend/break very easily compared to utility knife blades. A new utility blade is almost as sharp as a carpet blade and works a lot better for scoring or cutting with a template. Any professional flooring installer will tell you that a utility knife is much better for cutting sheet goods or scoring floor tile than a carpet knife.
