Going to steamboat over spring break and they have service pretty much everywhere in the mountians. Just wondering what would be the best app for putting way points of riding spots and just getting around in general.

I have the backcountry navigator app and the snowmobile trail map overlay. I think it was around $25 but I like that way better than my garmin rino. You can also download an area for when there is no cell service.

I got maps 3d pro and am really liking it so far but haven't gotten to try it out in the backcountry much yet with how this year is going. Hoping to try it out this weekend and I'll report back.

These require a cell signal to provide an accurate current location, correct?

Do they use a lot of data when you are using them to actively track your route?

No cell service is required qith the backcountry navigator. Download the area you will be riding and save it. Gps takes care of the rest I have turned mu phone on airplane mode to save battery life and the tracking feature still works. I think they have a free sample you can download to play with

If the map for your riding area is available PDF MAPS is not a bad app and the price is right (free).

I am on an iPhone 6 and using Gaia GPS. I downloaded the US topo maps for my primary riding area so I have maps when not in cell service - about 1.5gb of map space. Built in Gps in the iPhone is very accurate and doesn't kill the battery too fast. I'm quite happy with this setup and think it cost me $20.

Polaris snow trails has a free app for smartphone.I use it in airplane mode to keep battery life, but you do have to download the area on your phone also.
I like it better than the topo maps, when you want to head in you can see where you are from the trail.

Second on the gaia GPS app. Download the topo and aerial so you have it on your phone. Can ride all day on a full battery charge. Aerial is good enough to see logging roads. Can also import the KMZ file from a link on here to get the trails

I have an iphone 5. When I put it in airplane mode it will not show my location on my google maps app, even if I have a good cell signal.

If I have one of these other apps, my understanding is it will show my current location while in airplane mode without a cell signal.

Is this understanding correct?

I finally got a chance to try out Maps 3d pro for awhile this weekend. It worked really well, and is definitely worth the price ($2.99). You can save the maps, add waypoints, look at terrain in 2d/3d, and check elevations anywhere you want while looking around the map.

Here is a shot of our days route in 2d mode to show the whole route. The straight line across the middle was from turning my phone on airplane mode part way up to test it and it wasn't logging so I turned it back to regular mode with bluetooth and wifi off, and it jumped to my current location, hence the straight line. Otherwise it logged perfectly. It used 50% battery in about 6 hours of logging non-stop, plus some picture taking. If I had turned off the logger or played with settings, it should be a bit better. It also has a nice graph of elevation and speed as well.

A buddy of mine has this and it seems to work very well all the time. I tried the Polaris app but it burnt up a lot of battery, and I suppose data too. If you're gonna use it a lot the Backcountry Navigator looks like a reasonable choice.

Once you put your phone in airplane mode, no gps signal works. In order to conserve battery, I turn cellular data off, Bluetooth off, and wifi off. When these are left on, it usually drains the battery searching for a signal. I have the I phone 5 and it took 70% of my battery to use Gaia gps app all day (8-5)

Another vote for BackCountry Navigator. If you have an android device, it's the way to go. I have an old phone with out the sim card and can track my trip and barely use 40% battery for 8 hours. I like the fact I can export my tracks in to Google Earth afterwards.

I'll be the next vote for Backcountry Navigator. Such a great gps app. You can download maps for use where there is no service and you can run it in airplane mode. Never once had a dropped gps signal. Like that you can easily switch maps during tracking. I prefer the Accuterra maps (upgrade option) and use their slope and imagery w/topo maps back and forth all the time.

Can you post a screenshot of the Accuterra map?
