Best Shovel?

I really like the BCA shovels with the integrated probe or saw built into the handle. I still reccommend carrying a separate probe but having it built into the handle just gives you an extra.

If you want a shovel with a saw built in then IMHO the Voile is the one to get. It uses a sawzall blade, so it is very tough and if it breaks it is easy to replace.

I carry the Voilé, it's got a little bit bigger shovel area than some but it does fit inside my pack and it's all metal construction. It's also got a D shaped handle which I prefer over the T shaped handles- handles are always plastic and the D seems to be more stout and less prone to breaking.

like kevin said, make sure that the shovel is metal and not plastic, or some form of plastic....plastic doesn't move slabs of heavy snow if your buddy is trapped in a avy...

also with the shovel and probe combo...if the probe isn't at least 10', your wasting your time with it...longer is better...(that's what she said) sorry had to insert (that's what she said) jokes.

BCA with saw in handle is awesome. Would buy again for sure!

Not plastic isn't an adequate characteristic. Many aluminum shovels will crumple into folded up, useless heap while your buddy will die feet below you because you cheaped out and bought a $20 aluminum shovel. Yes plastic will break, but some aluminum will too. I walked on some avy debris this morning and it was rock hard. I mean I had to kick my toes in so I wouldn't slide downhill, and even then my toes went in 1/4" tops. My current shovel is a Voile T6 Telepro. D-handle, T6 aluminum alloy, and extendable handle. It fits in my pack well, is reasonable on weight, and worth its weight in gold if time is of the essence.

Just some food for thought.

I wear an ABS Vario 15L pack and its a top loader where you store your shovel and probe in the pack itself vs outside in a shovel pouch. I used to use the S.O.S shovel and Ive also tried the HMK. Those shovels were great shovels but the blade width was just a touch too wide and it was a struggle to pull the shovel blade out of the pack quickly. I went with the BCA traverse shovel this season and its the perfect width to slide right into the pack and has a great extendable handle. I carry a seperate probe and folding Gerber saw with several blades. Usually a probe that comes with a shovel is a 6-7 footer and usually smaller in diameter. Go with a 10 ft probe like stated previously. If your buddy carries a probe mounted in the shovel handle, tell him youll carry his probe while he carries your 10 footer. This also goes for the guy who cheaps out and buys a stupid plastic shovel; you carry his cheap garbage to rescue him with, and he can carry your good gear to rescue you! Good luck.

I swear by this shovel. I can move a crazy amount of snow with less effort and in a shorter amount of time. BCA will be coming out with a similar design here shortly as well.

Ortovox Kodiak

snobuny bought one of these after seeing Brandy's in action. it is a nice shovel no doubt but, (and there is always a but) personally if it came with a T handle and a saw, instead of the garden shovel handle top, i would be all over it.

every time i look at it, i venture to guess at times in the trees, everything is grabbing that handle trying to pull it out of the pack.
