Best route from Bay Area to Mammoth lakes

Visiting family in bay area and driving to Mammoth on Wednesday.

What is the best route pulling a 4 place trailer ?

I would say Reno down 395 to Mammoth......Figure 3-3.5 hrs from Bay area to Reno and then another 3 hrs or so from there. I would guess 6-6.5hrs total.

Depends on where in "the Bay"....

If you are south bay, taking 50 or 88 over to 395 would be smart

From San Leandro / Hayward.

Driven the HWY 50 many , many times just not with a trailer and was 20 years ago.

Was kind of confused over which road up in Tahoe would be open to cut across to the 395. Tried the CALTRANS "type in the road" website but not clear as to which route is completely open.

Best route

395 north to Minden, 88 south then 89 over Luther pass drops you in at Meyers. Then 50 south to Sacramento, 50 has about 35 miles of windy road but not bad. About three miles up 88 from the turn off to 89 is blue lakes/hope valley snow park.

Did the safer route 80 to 395 .... CHP made them chain up !
