Best riding near Summit County?

Any insight on riding conditions around Summit? I am heading out in 2 weeks. Sounds like Vail Pass is rough, thinking about Rabbit Ears...

Rough, Everything is rough. Summit doesn't have enough to ride, SC has a little but is low. RE would be your best bet for any riding at this point. With highs in the upper 30's the next 5 days lets just say we need snow.

This season is a JOKE so far

Absolute JOKE this year so far, Summit County is more then 50% behind normal conditions right now. Copper mountain has received 4.5 Feet total all season, normally they'd have double. Keystone, something silly like 3ft so far.

Apparently wolf creek and rabbit ears are the only decent areas. Friends were at the Mesa but said major boulders all over and everywhere. Basically right now is equivalent to april last year, poor conditions.

See that big ridge of high pressure off the west coast. It has been there since Christmas. Everything heading towards us hits it and goes straight up to Alaska. It is starting to break down but dang! That has been our bane this entire month. If it will just move we still have plenty of time for this year to turn out well.

Well said Duke and thanks for the pic, that explains a lot!

I haven't ridden since New Years Eve. The snow is just not there to actually get out and ride. It's still fun but over Christmas we had close to seven feet on Buff Pass and now we have less than 4. It hasn't melted but week after week of nothing but sun, wind and extremely cold temps have done nothing but brutalize the snowpack we do have. Slides are popping up everywhere. It was good if you like the steep, shady trees but even that is settling down to it'll be pretty easy to hang up on a stump or deadfall. December snowpack was at 100% in that area, but now we are at 44% in the same area. And that just came from our water environmental guy here at work.

I kid you not, I saw a bunch of trucks heading up Friday and Saturday morning and by lunchtime, those very same trucks were sitting at the bars in town. And they were flatlanders and any snow is good snow to those guys. So all I can think is that the snow sucked so bad they bagged it or they had some sled carnage that ended their trip.

Without trying to be a Negative Nancy, I'd say that it's just not there yet. At least this time last year the gates were covered, that's not true this year. I hope it changes soon.

Hey guys, a little is better than none, just remember you can't go gung ho out thru the powder and not except to chance hitting those landmines. See my post on the Flattops riding yesterday.
